When my older brother was born both my parents were happy to have had a boy first but they immediately hoped for a girl next. Happily for them, I was a girl. There was no sex determination back then so it was an intense waiting game for them!

I have no idea. I know my MIL cried when she learned that DH's younger brother was a boy. I don't know about my parents, though. They've never told me if they did.

@Rubies: I am sure my dad wanted a boy both times. He has two girls. Sorry dad!!!!
Now he has two grandsons though, so it all works out

I don't know if my mom had a true preference, but she was 100% certain I was a girl the whole time. They didn't have insurance, so an ultrasound to determine gender wasn't an option, but after that wait, turned out she was right!

My parents are traditional old school Chinese so they want all boys and no girls. Of course they ended up having 5 daughters. They were beyond thrilled when we found out LO was a boy, and even happier that another grandson is on the way. I wish they didn't have a preference. It makes me feel bad for my nieces because I know my parents treat them differently.

I think my mom really wanted a boy for her second, but got me instead. Then she had another girl. But she got twin boys eventually to make up for her years of waiting.

My mom didn't care much but my dad wanted girls. Lucky for him he got 3!

They wanted a girl from the get-go and kept trying until they had me (I have 3 older brothers).

They both wanted two girls, but I am pretty sure they still love my little brother

My mom wanted a boy so bad. She had 3 girls instead. Now she has 4 grandsons and 4 granddaughters (counting my step siblings children) and she definitely has a preference for the boys.

@yin: Oh noooes...It makes me sad reading that, too! Do you get special treatment because you have given them grandsons?

I don't think so - they had 4 girls and my dad always said he didn't know what he'd do with a boy (totally not a manly man, lol).

My parents wanted a boy. I was first, they hadn't even considered that I might be a girl so they had no girl names picked out. Then my sister came along. Finally my brother was last. They named him the same name they had reserved when they were hoping I was a boy 6 years prior!

I have two older bros so they definitely wanted a girl...and they got me! Yay!

They both wanted a girl. My mom keeps telling DH to keep all her girls safe. She has a strong gender preference today with our babies.

I don't think so. They had 2 girls and seemed to be completely fine with that. I'm sure my dad would have loved a boy though (he's a firefighter and has his pilot's license, so lots of fun "boy" things), so I think he's pretty excited to be getting a grandson. My sister and I were both Daddy's girls though.

I don't think so.... I remember my talking about how my uncles wife was SO glad when my sister & I were girls b/c she wanted to give the family the first boy and my mom thought the was dumb & crazy. lol

My mom always gloats about having one of each!

I know my dad wanted at least one boy, so my mom was glad when their first was a boy. After that they didn't care and they had 4 more girls.
My dad seems to have a preference for grandsons now, though. So far the only two grandchildren are boys, and at some point talking about whether mine is a boy or girl (team green) my dad said something like "well who would prefer a girl?" He also seems to think my brother's son is more closely related to my dad than my sister's son because apparently, genes are transferred differently to sons. It kind of really irritates me, actually.
