My parents never did. The first year I went (kindergarten I think because I came to the US when I was close to 4) I went with friends and their mom. Then with an older cousin the next year. Then pretty much on my own every year after that. Back then we got apples and ate them-- the horror! It's crazy to think how much freedom we had just a generation ago because that was the norm for all the kids in my neighborhood.

First year I was in first grade, my immigrant parents had no idea what the holiday was... Didn't even have a costume for the school parade. we turned the lights off and waited for the kids to stop tot!
They took us for a couple years and then we went with friends on our own! Oh the horror! We were only 8/9!?

All the neighborhood dads took the kids while the moms relaxed at home!

No. It wasn't allowed for various (religious) reasons. My grandmother's birthday was on Halloween so we had a birthday party with the family every year instead.
I still have a hard time remembering to celebrate because I"m not used to it, but managed to get LO a costume last year. I'm excited for this year as he's more grown up and I get to take him to a trick or treating event in our town square.

My dad always took us TOTing while my mom stayed home and transformed our kitchen into a spooky haunted house. She made mini pizzas that looked like Jack o lanterns and Koolaid with spider ice cubes. She was (is) the best at making the holidays special, especially Halloween.

I grew up in the country so everyone's parents drove them house to house. And we only went to houses where we knew who lived there. We were always with parents.
I didn't get to experience TOTing in the "city/suburbs" until after I was married - it's so different being able to walk house to house!

Every year.
When I was in kindergarten my mom dressed up as a witch. She was terrifying so I held my neighbors hand instead. When you have long dark hair and a long nose it doesn't take much to go full witch.

yep my dad would take my sister and I and we'd also go with a friend from school and their siblings/parent. Nice big group. And we'd hit both neighbourhoods

Yes, if driving slowly down the road watching us run house to house is considered "taking us out". We lived in a small town and pretty much knew everyone.

I don't remember my first time TOT, but one of our parents always took us and unintentionally we would sometimes end up in a group of other neighbors.
My 7th grade history teacher said TOT in her day meant the child came inside the neighbors house and they would "guess" the costume while the kids consumed the homemade treat. OMG that sounded like such a long, horrid night! She was a probably a kid in the '40s or '50s.

My parents always took us truck or treating until I was in middle school then I went out with a group of friends. I'm excited to take DS, especially since we get to eat all of his candy! Lol

My parents took us around my aunt's neighborhood and the mall. After we finished trick-or-treating around my aunt's neighborhood, we'd help her pass out candy.

Yes! My dad knew about the neighborhoods in beverly hills that would give out the full size candy so he and my mom would drive us out there and drop us off and sit in the car and watch us walk the neighborhood from the car. That was so fun.

Yes, my parents took us. When we lived abroad, they'd line up some of their friends to participate since it wasn't the norm and then they'd drive us to those homes. They took us around our neighborhood when we were stateside. Around 10, I started going just with friends and did that probably until 12.

Yep - every year! My mom always made our costumes, and my parents would dress up, too! I have such fun memories of it and I'm so excited to do that with my kids.
