I lived in lala land of excitement and awe of being pregnant but was abruptly brought back down to earth when we started prenatal classes. I was super happy and excited in general, but not so much that I lost sight of how much change this baby would bring.

While I definitely think some people really just don't have a clue. There are others who have had a lot of experience with babies and therefore aren't as terrified about the prospect of being responsible for a little person, so they focus on all the excitement.

I'm excited about dressing my baby just as much as the next person, but I'm more concerned about finding daycare, a peditrician, and safe carseat, ect. But when I need a break I do look at nursery bedding and clothes, it calms me and takes me from the stuff that brings on anxiety!

Yes. Especially those women who are in absolutely no position in their lives to emotionally or financially raise a child but say “oh it will all just work out”. Life isn’t magic and hugely complex issues don’t just resolve themselves on their own – it’s about the work YOU put into it. How are they not stressed out?

I can say that I feel this way a lot.
Since I've been a mom for 9 years it's hard for me to see brand new first time mom's acting as if they just know everything.
I guess that's somewhat normal but at the same time I want to look at them and be like "Do you have any idea what this is actually going to be like? Do you understand that some days your baby won't wear more than a onesie and you'll be so exhausted you won't bathe for days".
It's not all cute clothes and sleeping babies. It's real life "crying in your face, pooping up it's back, not getting more than 2 hours of sleep at a time, motherhood." To hell with what your baby is going to wear.
It makes me mad. (in case you couldn't tell lol )

Sometimes but sometimes I think people just like talking about the fun stuff instead of the less fun.

I know a few people who are like that and I just avoid talking to them about anything baby related. Because everytime I say something they say "oh isn't it wonderful??".... and I feel like a bad mom if I say that it's not always sunshine and rainbows

I know several people like this and it drives me crazy. I like to think that they're really scared when no one else is around but just afraid to admit it. That's what I keep telling myself!

It reminds me of my stepsister. She was a teenager when she purposely got pregnant (to "straighten out" her then-boyfriend). And she kept saying that she wanted something to be just hers that would love her. She was absolutely enamored with the idea of being a Mommy, but not the reality and responsibility that comes with being a Mother, and actually having to care for her child.

I'm 25 weeks pregnant, and I'll be the first to admit I have no idea what it will really be like to have a newborn. I can try to educate myself, I can guess about what it will be like, but push comes to shove, I'm as clueless as any first-time mother. I try to think about the fun parts, because if I think too hard about the rest, about all of the unknowns and stories from other moms, I start to get overwhelmed and stress out and worry that I shouldn't have even gotten pregnant, that I can't handle it.

So sometimes I purposely put myself in la-la-land, because if I didn't, I'd be a stressed out, absolutely terrified hot-mess pretty much all of the time, and that's no good for anyone.

I would probably be one of those pregnant women that seems to live in la la land...most of my conversations with my mom revolve around baby clothes and how we'll decorate the nursery! I don't know...I mean, I share my fears with DH but with everyone else, i'm not just going to sit there and spill my deepest feelings, you know? Maybe those people annoying you are doing the same--going through the scary parts in private, but talking about the fun stuff in public. And as pps have said, there's really no way to know about the scary stuff, or just how scary it is, until you're there. And I certainly don't want to spend time reading through horror stories and freaking myself out.

@Mrsbells: Exactly! Plus I think there's a lot of denial going on. For the longest time, even when I was pregnant, I just ignored the fact that I'd be pushing something pretty big out of my who-ha. No sense in worrying about something I have no control over!

I don't mind so much when I hear first time moms get excited about buying cute clothes and etc. Dressing your baby is fun and something to get excited about! They'll learn in due time that motherhood is tough.
Internet sucks so I don't wanna look through previous posts, but good for the girls who decided to announce their pregnancies. We let everyone know as soon as we found out the first time around.
I'm all about letting our friends and family know so they can pray for us and give us support early on. I had a friend tell us that she miscarried, but she never told us she was pregnant.
Why keep the pregnancy a secret if you're going to share your miscarriage with your friends and family?
