I don't mind them. But then again I have boys so there's no chance I'll be immersed in them.

I was never into princesses maybe because my parents never bought me anything princess related, and i was a tomboy! we've intentionally not introduced them to olive, but her daycare teachers call her princess as does my mom, so she learned the word. also... she is into frozen! there is no stopping that!

I'm such a hypocrite because I loved them when I was younger and even had Ariel bed sheets...but I really hope M isn't into them (or at least as into them as I was). I don't mind a few princess-y things, but princess clothes, backpacks, toys, etc. is just overkill for me.

We love the Disney princesses. My 3.5 year old loves Frozen and Tangled. We talk about how the Princesses always try to do the right thing and how brave they are (depending on the story line). I think that the newer Disney movies (and even the older ones if you focus on certain aspects) do a good job of portraying the Princesses in a positive way, instead of the "damsel in distress" typical fairy-tale princess.
I, speaking personally, don't mind the Disney Princesses and we do watch Disney movies in our house. We went to Disney World in October and my daughter just lit up when she saw Rapunzel (the Princess lunch in EPCOT was her favorite!).... we have some play princess dresses, I'm sure there's a crown or two floating around here.
I do know that some folks have a strong dislike for the Princesses, but I'm not sure exactly why.

@lawbee11: me too!
I'm not necessarily anti-princess - more like anti-character stuff. I so don't want her to beg for character clothes, bed sheets, etc. So far she's not into anything!

I don't mind them, really. My DH is really, really anti Disney so we will have to see how it pans out. ....

I love Disney movies and hope LO does too (she watched Frozen for the first time yesterday and was in a trance anytime they sang) but I want to avoid the character "stuff" in our house if I can!

@Cherrybee: Is your DH anti-Princess or whole whole Disney package?
I truly am just wondering, only because we love all things Disney. I'm not trying to be rude or highjack the thread - promise!!!

I love them!!!
That said, I'm not into all the themed-items - curtains, sheets, clothes, etc. But I love all the movies. J has already watched Pocahontas and Frozen with me

I love them and M is starting to get into them. She knows the names of the princesses and has a few items gifted to her for her birthday. Her favorite thing right now is a princess nightgown that she wears all the time, its soo freakin cute.

But I do want to add that i love everything disney and can't wait to take her to disneyworld! I just don't want her room to end up looking like a Disney store...

@lawbee11: Same! I just don't want Princess everything every where.

@autumnlove: have you read 'olivia and the fairy princesses'? it's amazing! she questions why all the girls want to be pink princesses. some people dislike it because she's not all about being a pink princess & says if everyone is a pink princess, it's not special anymore & makes other suggestions for what one could be, but that's what i love about it

@pinkcupcake: Us, too
But with a 3.5 year old, it's easy to keep the Disney Store from taking over... I don't buy it and she doesn't know it exists! Unless we see something (like Princess bed sheets) at Target, she wouldn't even know to ask for them. That happened once, and I just said "Oh but we have sheets at home. We don't need new ones yet." And that was the end of it. Might be harder down the road but there are worse things in life than Princess bed sheets

Hahaha I don't mind them, but dd loooooooooooves them!
grapefruit / 4800 posts
My DD loves them and I'm not sure how it got started, I'd never read her princess books. She wanted me to tell her about Snow White last night and it was hard. There was an evil queen that didn't like that snow white was pretty so she tried to kill her, then a prince came and kissed her and it was all better.
I don't mind the pretty dresses and pink and woodland creatures and all that but the story lines make me a little worried about what message I'm sending.

I hate Disney princesses and our home is a princess-free zone for now! (And Barbie free!!)
@mrs. bird: I heard that at a story time and it was amazing!!!! My daughter reminds me a little of Olivia
cantaloupe / 6017 posts
Not my thing, never was when I was little either. My best friends daughter is obsessed, and has been for a few years, which I find hilarious because my friend is a lot like me in that regard.
So I'm prepared for the reality that I can't choose what my daughter gets into.
I will say, it's part of the reason I want to wait to introduce tv for as long as possible...

@ktdid23: i just asked him - cue huge rant!!
He hates Disney in general but the Princesses situation embodies everything he hates about it. We walk down the shop aisles and they are full of Disney Princess dresses - identical, homogeneous. He fondly remembers having a dressing up box full of Viking helmets and cowboy hats; it wasn't a "Woody" hat. He feels that Disney (not just the films, but the entire corporation) has taken some of the imagination out of childhood and attempts to tell people how to think. He says that once your need to think is removed, all there is left is to consume.
He also has a real problem with the sanitisation of the fairy stories. Most of these fairy tales - the Grimm ones especially - were actually quite dark and yet they have made them into "nicey nicey" things for no good reason, taking the moral out of the original stories. The films usually have happy endings and good triumphs evil, evil people disintegrate and magic hair brings your boyfriend back to life. He feels that this paints an unrealistic view of life to children and tells them that everything will be okay if only they meet a handsome prince.
This may well all be a misrepresentation of his thoughts because it is hard to type while he is (still) ranting. He's now going on about how Disney are no different to Amazon and Pfizer....
..... i just asked him if he liked Shrek (he does!) and he paused for a second.... and has just told me it's not Disney, it's Dreamworks. Gah!

I don't mind princesses. Lots of people call my lo a princess and I just go along with it. We don't watch a lot of TV or movies so she won't be exposed to them anytime soon at home.
grapefruit / 4649 posts
I don't mind them and enjoy them myself in small doses. I hope our little one isn't obsessed or anything but otherwise it doesn't bother me. In general I try to avoid too much commercialization but there is no harm in enjoying a bit of pop culture.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
I don't mind them. I think the older generation of the Disney princess like Snow White and Cinderella revolved around the damsel in distress/being saved by the prince, but the newer storylines like Mulan and especially Sophia the First are not following the same mold.
There was an excellent episode on yesterday on Sophia the First, it was about blended families celebrating Mothers Day for the first time together.

i don't mind them, but LO is not going through any crazy princess phase--if he were i might feel differently. i really liked disney movies growing up, although i liked the movies overall and for some reason didn't focus on the princesses. too obsessed with the songs and sidekicks, i guess.

I just for the life of me don't understand the fascination. Why love a retrograde social order based on hereditary monarchy and aristocracy? Why princesses, why not princes? Or queens? I'm glad princesses were not a thing when I was little.

Ugh, I hate the whole princess trend so much. To the point where I almost am hoping this baby in my belly isn't a girl.

I love princesses! Especially the Disney princesses! I loved them as a child, and never had any long term affects from liking them - didn't turn out spoiled rotten or anything... quite the opposite!
I think it's just a fun, magical thing for kids to play along with. Kind of like Harry Potter - just because I love Harry Potter, doesn't mean I'm actually trying to be a wizard...

Princesses ftw
She has an insulated straw cup and some books too.
And crocs!

I have no interest in Disney or princesses. If I had a daughter, I would want a more substantive example set for her. A princess is a stupid role model because it's not based in reality.. Life is not all about looking beautiful and landing a prince. At least, that is not what I would choose for my child.
I never liked that stuff as a kid either, though.
admin / wonderful grape / 20724 posts
@ElbieKay: Did you see Frozen? Because I don't like princesses either, but being beautiful and landing a prince wasn't what that movie was about at all.
pomegranate / 3231 posts
@mrbee: No, I keep reading about this movie on the internet, but I have no idea what it's about. I have never even seen a commercial for it and could not name or identify any of its characters.
My only child is a boy who is not quite 10 weeks old, so we are are still free from children's media in our house!
