@ElbieKay: I also dislike the idea of princesses, and grew up not really enjoying Disney movies for the most part. But princess movies have changed a great deal, so I think watching a recent one may surprise you.

I'm not into them. I was never into them as a kid either. I try to stay away from that section the few times we were at a toy store. She is aware of them now and has asked for the princess option sometimes but she's more into hello kitty or anything with cats now. Yesterday she said she is a "princess" - that was a first.

No, I liked them as a kid. If I had a girl, I wouldn't go all out with it. And wouldn't plan on teaching her she needed to be rescued by a prince. But for me as a kid, it was more about being special and pretty and everyone is a princess blah blah blah.
I tried to talk my mom into buying my son these. The packaging I think makes it look more "princessy" than it is. Gah, why can't I get the pretty toys to play with?

I'm pretty indifferent, I was OBSESSED with Cinderella as a kid! Ob. Sessed. I didn't grow up with jaded views of relationships because I watched/read princess stories. It's just pretend. I don't think J will grow up thinking he'll be a pirate if he watches Jake and the never land pirates. Just like I don't assume if I'm a hooker that Richard gere will hire me, then fall in love with me.

Not into them. My LO is still young (only 2) so I don't think she "gets" them yet, but I plan to neither encourage nor discourage interest and pray that she doesn't become obsessed.

DH said he's anti princess but we'll see what happens when this little girl is born. I'm meh about them.

I didn't like them as a kid. I only liked babies, always had my baby with me. And I am going to be the party pooper and say I only like princesses while at Disneyland. I'm all about dressing up and being Girly but just not into Disney. But I do love royalty!

I don't hate them and if I had a daughter, I'd encourage the Disney fairy tales and fluff and happy endings and dress up. I think childhood deserves to be magical and not a tirade against sexism and corporations. I remember fondly my Disney princess obsession

@Applesandbananas: oh geez my post probably came off as anti magic and sexism and stuff. I just meant that I'd rather her do the whole doll and barbie thing. And I like magical things, just Disney princesses are too cheesy for my liking.

@anonysquire: oh no, it wasn't directed at anyone! I just hear that a lot, that the concept is sexist and that Disney is evil and I just enjoyed it so much in my childhood that I couldn't imagine not sharing the magic. Kind of like Santa
and even as an adult, my mom and I have gone to see several of the Disney princess movies as musicals and I still find it really enjoyable and fun.

I don't mind them. I was a tomboy as a kid, so I tend to gravitate to other themes for DD. But I am a lot more into pink with her than I was with myself (even as a kid).
