lol we don't even let her run around the house in just a diaper. I think its never really occurred to me. Clothes go off, clothes go on... sort of just what we do. I guess from a practical standpoint it doesn't make sense for us either because we keep our house pretty cool so I feel like she'd be cold in just a diaper inside, and if it was warm enough for her to not be cold outside in a diaper it'd just be more area to sunscreen (we are so pale lol). Plus now that she's a toddler she'd just rip her diaper off and be naked. So yep. Clothes always.

(But I don't really care what other people do with their kids!)

Occasionally we do diaper only inside. But outside clothes are on. If my girl has on a dress she's also got shorts or a bloomer on to cover her diaper. I don't want diapers or undies to be seen on my kids.

Yes, we do. They're usually dressed but if they get hot, messy, or eat without a bib I strip them down. My babies would never wear clothes except for sun/cold protection and car seat strap pinching.

Our neighbor has kids similar ages. Both our youngest would be running around in diapers a lot of times last summer. Then on the other hand there's a neighbor down the street that was just aghast that a guy was mowing his lawn shirtless on a 100 degree day. Most people do wear shirts to mow here but we have a pool a block from our house, I think half the guys/boys walk over shirtless. She must just spend a lot of the summer aghast or in shock

The few times he's been just in his diaper at home, I found him fidgeting with the diaper, so we pretty much always have him clothed.

I think your neighbors are weird for making it a big deal. I don't think you did anything wrong. I'd let my kid run around in their diaper outside.

We usually put a shirt on him outside because of the sun and inside too. But even now we let my toddler run around inside in underwear and a shirt. He's usually too cold to go without a shirt.

Not usually outside because of bugs. I don't think it's weird though and my kids are in diapers inside all the time. I think its pretty rude of them to ask why he was naked. I wouldn't have thought twice. I have picture of me naked outsode too so maybe my view is skewed lol

My two boys love running around in just a diaper and/or underwear. I'm fine with it.
They usually don't do it outside because they both have fair skin and I'm all about covering them up from the sun.

Never even in the heat of summer.. She has so much clothes, she's gotta wear them! Actually over the weekend was the first time DD was just in diapers for more than 5 minutes while waiting for her turn to take a bath (amongst her cousins).

@Tanjowen: @PinkElephant: Since you weren't playing in a pool, I'm not sure the swimsuit analogy is applicable. I wear a swim suit to the beach, but I wouldn't wear one to hang out in the drive way.

We hangout in the driveway and play with our neighbors almost every night. I wouldn't bring the kids out in only a diaper, and I would think it was weird if one of the other parents did. I would probably even say something wondering what happened to his clothes.

She runs around the house all the time in a diaper (half of the time she has a t-shirt on as well, but just as often not). We will let her play or eat out on the back deck in her diaper or I will take her out to get the mail with me in a diaper and t-shirt, but for extended play in the front yard I would probably throw some clothes on. It wouldn't bother me if another child was outside in his/her diaper, though.

@PinkElephant: Yeah if it was someone just walking by who commented that would be weird. But we all hang out and set up shop in my driveway to play together for at least an hour in the evenings (it sounded to me like this was what the OP was doing as well but I may be wrong). In that situation, I would probably comment if one of the kids was only in a diaper.

I think there's a social stigma around kids being outside in only a diaper and maybe that's what people are reacting to.

@looch: yeah, I agree. My first thought was that I wouldn't let them because if it was hot enough to be naked, I'd be worried about sun exposure and if it was dusk, I'd be worried about bugs. But I still wouldn't let them do it even if those things were a factor and I've spent some time trying to figure out why. I guess that is it.

My kids spend the whole summer in just diapers in our backyard. But I wouldn't take them anywhere besides our yard in that attire. But at home, it's great! And how else will they work on their tans?
