I usually peek out the window that's righr by the door and talk to them through that or not answer at all. However, I just opened the door to a guy selling pest control and I immediately felt uncomfortable and it felt super fishy. It was just me and DD here and it's 7:45pm. As soon as I shut the door, I felt like a totally idiot for answering under those circumstances. What do you do?

I've opened the door a couple of times because we don't have a peephole and I'm expecting someone and sometimes it's my neighbor who likes to pop by. I usually say no thank you and close the door.

I don't open the door if I'm alone with my daughter. depending on the season, when it is dark already, I don't see why anyone would need to sell/talk to my family about anything at that time. It does make me queasy and I'll keep looking outside to make sure they go away and I'll have my phone ready just in case.

I totally understand! somehow I feel rude for not opening and that's why I pace back and forth until they're gone to breathe a sigh of relief lol.
My husband is opposite, he likes to zoom to open the door as soon as there are.knocks or bell rings. I usually have to remind him to be careful and see who it is first. -
@turquoisemama: not really.....we live in a very safe area and I guess I'm always too impulsive to answer the door....I probably should be more cautious. However, the way our house is built, our front door is on the side of the house and faces my neighbor's front door (also on the side of their house) and they always leave their door open (and screen door closed) and it's only like 15 ft away from my front door so I somehow feel safe that way?

I usually just don't open the door if I'm home alone. We don't have a peephole so I normally practice my ninja moves, trying to see who's there and make sure they leave. I also keep my phone handy whenever DH opens the door to a stranger.

I have 2 very large sidelights with a frosted safety glass, and a dark security door. I can't see who it is as I don't have a peephole so I always ask "who is it". I have a do not knock sticker, so "by law" salespeople are not allowed to call. If its a random person I don't know I just talk through a closed door, or at most crack the door open and talk through security door. paranoid.

I never open the door anymore. A few years ago I have but times are different now. There was a scam recently about flower delivery that was caught on surveillance that really scared me (southern California area). The guy brings a flower bouquet and once you open the door, 2 other guys use force to knock you down or hold you at gunpoint and will force entry into your house to steal things. They stole some money and jewelry from this home but luckily nobody was hurt. They didn't realize this home had surveillance so their faces were clearly identified. The video went viral so it was a wakeup call for many.

This is why I love living in an apartment with a buzzer. I can see/talk topeople on the video monitor before buzzing them in, so I know exactly who I'm dealing with. I only open for the postman!

I never open the door, unless it's the pizza delivery guy. I am not interested in the hard sell. I tell them I am not interested through the door, I don't pretend that we're not at home or anything.

I don't. We have a no solicitors sign but still get people wanting to shovel snow In The winter and students with anti-fracking petitions all the time. I got caught by them a few times expecting the postman and now I'm triple cautious to check first.

This is why I own a large Lab that has an electric fence in the front. No one makes it past him to the door. Even though he's a loveable idiot, he's big. The 2 times he was inside and someone knocked I refused to answer.

This happened to me the other day. I was peaking out to see if my husband was coming up the road and a sales person was there. Through the door I tried to tell him to go away. My husband arrived moments later so I had to open the door to let him in. I was pretty annoyed by the sales person they claimed they were something official to do with the city and water but they were trying to sell filtration systems. I told them I'd look it up online and shut the door somewhat in their face. Maybe not nice of me but I don't like being lied to!

We always open the door. Although, if dh is home i will have him open it. We live in an area that's safe and we have 3 large dogs that will bark as soon as they start coming up our driveway, so antone up to no good will leave when they hear them. Plus, our neighbor has an outside pitbull that has taken to protecting our house also. I feel pretty safe here.
