I think it depends on how "bad" the meaning is. Something like "lame" might bother me. "Blind one" might not.

Yup it was very important that the name mean something positive. I think this might be cultural. Chinese names always have some sort of meaning. I think that definitely played a part in why I cared about the meaning as well.

I've seen different meanings listed for LO's name but usually it is listed as either strong or joy.

I'd probably check that it didn't mean something really bad, but just "not positive" or not applicable wouldn't bug me. My LO's name means "born on Christmas", and unless Christmas has moved to August, she was not.

I thought it would mean something to me... but in the end I chose name over meaning. J's name doesn't have a positive meaning. But he gives it a whole new meaning and that's what's important to me

Name meaning mattered a ton to my mother. All six of us kids have special meanings to our name:
-She outshines the starts
-Victorious
-Dearly loved
-Bright/honor
-Manly
- Praiseworthy

No as much as my husband! He will nix a name if he think the meaning is bad. If a name I like has a great meaning, I see that as icing on the cake.

I do like the name Mallory and learned it means "unlucky." Bummer!

I don't really care about the name meanings, but I do check to make sure it's not something awful. I had the name Ivah on my list for awhile and found out it meant iniquity soooo that went off my list!

I care about name meaning. There are sometimes where I just can't handle the meaning. (For example, someone I know used a name that means "misshapen head" for their child who had severe birth defects.) Most of the time though, it's a nice thing if a name has a positive meaning, but personal meaning can trump dictionary meaning.

I do care a lot, but I don't trust online name sites! Their definitions vary widely and are often inaccurate. For example, I don't think Claudia means lame. It's the feminine derivative of Claudius, a Roman dynastic name. Maybe they say it means lame because the emperor Claudius had a speech impediment?
