I do this all the time. I guess I'm so used to Amazon and their free shipping.
I think there is a meme out there that says something like "Have $60 worth in your shopping cart, but decides not to buy because of the $7 shipping fee."

All the time. If it doesn't have free shipping, I rarely buy from them.
pomegranate / 3438 posts
Yup. So many places do free shipping if you spend a certain amount. If it's going to cost me twice as much to have it shipped I don't want it that bad!

I do this all the time! I load up my online shopping cart, and if I can't find a code for free shipping I'll abandon it....
grapefruit / 4584 posts
If I'm ordering 1-2 items, definitely. Adding an extra $3-$4 per item sometimes means it's not as much of a deal as I originally thought. If I'm buying a bunch of things together, I care less since the per item additional cost isn't much.
pear / 1648 posts
Absolutely! If it's a really special item that I can't get anywhere else, I may reconsider. But how do some clothing sites get away with $12-13 standard shipping when others ship for free or even $5??
pomelo / 5220 posts
constantly! Paying for shipping seems outdated. I totally abandon the cart if the shipping is too high!
grapefruit / 4066 posts
yes! I'll even order an Amazon Prime item on Amazon bc it's free shipping, even if it's a little bit more expensive than the same item elsewhere.

@KT326: @csross217: Yeah, what has been getting me is if you have to spend like $100 to get free shipping. I often wonder how I'm saving money if I'm buying stuff I don't really need. I usually only buy from places that have a low minimum purchase requirement like $25-30... maybe $50, if I'm buying a few things.
I also considered driving to the store instead of paying shipping costs. I decided that paying $8 was worth not having to drive and take at least an hour to get there and back. Even though with gas prices low, I would pay about $5 in gas to get there.
grapefruit / 4085 posts
Most of the time - unless I'm already getting a % off the items, then sometimes I'm ok with a low shipping fee.
grapefruit / 4584 posts
@bluestriped bee: This is my recent rational with paying shipping fees more often recently. With two kids who either have to come with me or stay with a sitter while I shop, I'm finding myself paying shipping (though I'm still annoyed about it) more and more often. I don't always have time to get to a store; it's often not worth $8 in the annoyance of finding parking (we live in a major city) or spending nearly $6 on public transit and still having it take forever.
pomegranate / 3438 posts
@bluestriped bee: I know what you mean. Usually if I can't buy it on Amazon Prime I won't get it until I can hit up an actual store. Or I'll shop at Target or Macy's since I always get free shipping with them (I have store cards).

I hate shipping fees! I saw a cute item I wanted last night from MoMA's online store - it was $12, but shipping was $8 - please!
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
Yup! all the time! I feel like I could get another item for the price of shipping man. No thanks!
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
@KT326: Oh, Macy's has free shipping with a store card? Good to know.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
Yup. I shop around for an item, if I can, to see where I can get shipping free. The only time I don't is if I'm trying to buy small/local, like on etsy. I think amazon has kind of ruined it for everyone else lol
pomegranate / 3438 posts
@bluestriped bee: You know what, I just looked and I think it's only when they are running a special. Either that or I end up spending the minimum needed for shipping.
kiwi / 554 posts
@bluestriped bee: I agree about the shipping minimums... Say the free shipping minimum is $50 and I have $40 in my cart, I'll spend a bunch of time trying to find something else I don't need for $10 instead of spending the $5 for shipping. It's pretty ridiculous.
blogger / eggplant / 11551 posts
Yes! Especially if the store is close to me, then I'll just suck it up and go in-store. But if there's something I really love I'll pay up. I hate that Anthropologie doesn't offer free shipping.
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
Of course!
If places have free returns I'll also spend extra to get to the minimum and just return a bunch of it (like at gap/ old navy). I don't mind paying a low shipping fee if I know I am keeping the item and it's still a good deal overall, but if I might return it I definitely won't.
pomegranate / 3113 posts
Yep. I only pay shipping if it's something I can't get elsewhere (ETA: and I REALLY REALLY want it...I have nixed many purchases of online-only things because I didn't want to pay shipping) or if I do a cost breakdown and find that it's still cheaper to buy from that site than from a different site with free shipping or a B&M store nearby.
pomegranate / 3658 posts
Yep, spoiled by Amazon Prime. I pretty much will not buy if I have to pay shipping. Most places do the free shipping with orders $50+ though, and normally I only buy from non-Amazon stores if they are having a big sale, so that works out. (Like ON is having a huge clearance sale today, FYI!)
coconut / 8483 posts
I usually only buy when there is free shipping. I'm in Canada so shopping from the states plus the exchange rate... Yikes!!
coconut / 8430 posts
Yes I hate paying for shipping!
@Mrs. High Heels: anthro shipping is expensive enough that it has saved me tons of money but making me click "close" on the browser instead of "buy"
grapefruit / 4187 posts
Absolutely. I had a whole house to furnish and shopped heavily from wayfair just because everything ships free. Had I shopped at other stores that charge for shipping I would have spent WAY more total.
blogger / eggplant / 11551 posts
@sunny: I have learned NOT to buy from anthro online unless I really really REALLY love it... because the sizing is all over the place with its different brands that I never know how things will fit. Sometimes it's still so tempting though. Sigh.
pineapple / 12566 posts
I definitely pay attention because there isn't usually free shipping where I live. Although, I recently bought a book from Amazon and It was only 80 cents more to have it shipped overnight instead of 3 days, so I went for it.
pear / 1558 posts
Yep. I thought I was good on Amazon a couple weeks ago, but one item didn't qualify for free shipping, so I just let the whole order sit in my cart.
GOLD / papaya / 10166 posts
Yes!! But, there have also been times where I end up paying for shipping because it's less than the difference between what I'm getting and how much I need to qualify for free shipping. Still, it makes it hard to not get the Amazon free shipping.
grapefruit / 4321 posts
@HLK208: I just ordered M's big girl bedroom furniture from PBK last night. The shipping and delivery fees almost made me want to vomit.
pomegranate / 3863 posts
Yes but I wonder, do the stores who offer "free shipping" just mark up their prices enough to cover the shipping cost? That doesn't really apply to Amazon though because they often are the cheapest...
blogger / apricot / 389 posts
Always. I actually paid $8.00 for shipping with Old Navy today and it hurt me a little inside. The deals were too good, and I didn't want to spend more to qualify for free shipping - so I just bit the bullet. Etsy is the WORST for shipping costs. Drives me crazy
pomelo / 5084 posts
@bluestriped bee: Oh totally. I guess I am cheap bc I do this ALL the time. Shipping charges make me ragey. I will totally cancel an entire order because of shipping (looking at YOU Babies R Us - they charge separate shipping for separate items in the same order sometimes!!). Amazon Prime or it doesn't happen. LOL.
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
Guilty! I will empty an online shopping cart in a heartbeat.
I like the online retailers that don't charge tax!!!
