I used to win all of our class spelling bees..

edit: I do remember words that characters in movies misspelled though. ie: Gilbert from Anne of Green Gables.

In 4th grade I went to the district-level bee and misspelled "purportedly," which I had never heard before. p-e-rportedly

In 7th grade, I won the school bee and went to the next level (don't remember what it was called), started talking too fast and spelled eraser e-r-e...although I meant to say a...but I couldn't go back and change it, against the rules...so I was out on an easy word.

Clearly, I've been scarred!

In fourth grade I missed the word "recital" on purpose so I could go to recess. Seriously, who holds a spelling bee duirng recess?!

In 7th grade I misspelled "assassin" at the state spelling bee. I missed an "s". It was a very sad day for me.

@Honeybee: I think I would have started laughing in the middle of slowly spelling out "assassin."

I was knocked out of the 5th grade spelling bee for butchering ecclesiastical. Don't know if I spelled that right just now?

No, but I remember losing a geography bee in fifth grade. It was down to me and one other student and we were in bonus rounds. We both got the question and if we both got it right or wrong we got another question and if one of us got it right we were the winner. We went through several rounds of us both getting them right. Then, the question was (and all you NYC bees will laugh at me), "What state outside of New York has the highest number of commuters to New York City?" The answer was New Jersey. I said Connecticut. AND the reason I said Connecticut was because of the damn Babysitters Club books!

I am clearly still bitter about this years later.

Nope! I used to win all the spelling bees in my class! Thanks to auto-correct my spelling skills are slowly deteriorating...

@mrbee: I couldn't skip recess... My friends and I were building our own fantasy village out of construction paper that day, so I obviously couldn't miss that...

I never had any spelling bees. boo but I loved spelling.

I misspelled "clock" in like 3rd grade.
I've never been a good speller but this bothered me so bad lol

@mrbee: that would be just fine. I had a reading buddy and we sat next to each other at recess, just reading. That is social right?

I am sure I misspelled plenty but I actually remember a girl ( I won't name her name haha but I know it to this day) in 5th grade spelling "Hamster" with a P & I had a hamster @ the time so I was like "noooooope" in my head hahaha

I loved spelling in grade school! I spelled 'haven't' wrong in a spelling bee because I couldn't figure out what the word was when my teacher said it out loud. Seriously...contractions in a spelling bee!?!?
