I won every spelling bee my school ever had. I spelled stevedore wrong in the Big City Regional Spelling Bee. I could'a been a contender!

    @mrbee: Vilnius? (ilnus = illness)?

Seems like a stretch, but that's all I got!

Poise. I will never forget it. I spelled it without the 'e'.

@Andrea: I used to hide in the bathroom and read at recess. Everyone always wanted to play dodgeball and it always resulted in me getting hit in the face, so I stuck to reading in the bathroom.

I won the school spelling bee in 6th grade and went on to the district spelling bee where I got the word edifice in the third round. I have no idea why I did this as I knew it was wrong but I spelled it edefice, sigh. I was so mad at myself!

@mrs. Yoyo: I'm a huge geography nerd too and I'm trying to run through world capitals as well to solve Mr Bee's riddle but I'm stuck!

@mrbee: Ha. See, I've never even heard of that particular ailment. Got it.

The only word I ever misspelled on a spelling test is still painful. Decathlon. I think I added another vowel in there, like De-Cath-A-Lon. Ugh.
Oh, and I realized in the eleventh grade that I had been spelling definitely wrong my entire life. It is not definAtely.

YES and it was an easy word that i knew how to spell, and i flew through it and forgot an "i". PARTICIPATION.

@mrbee: I know I'm a week behind on this post But I will never forget the word that I struck out on.

    Adjourn.

I started it with the letter "O"...and the bell went off. You really never forget the word you strike out on at a spelling bee!

Ok, so I've never shared this story before because it's soooo embarassing. In 4th grade I was one of two left standing in our whole school. I got the word "Popular". In my mind, I was like 'Oh man, too easy!' I rushed through and spelled P-O-P-L-A-R.

I knew how to spell it, I just rushed... but I was so embarrassed because I was like the least POPULAR kid in class (skipped grades, really small, and a know it all smarty pants-- which is not a good combination, let me tell you).

I was humbled and to this very day never told the story.

@Mrs. Jacks: Ah, I'm so glad you shared! It must have been really embarrassing for you at the time, especially because it seemed like the spelling bee was your moment to shine.

@Honeybee: yeah... I was about to beat an 8th grader who had just misspelled "obtunded", but he got back in the game and won because of my screw up. I think the whole school was pleased (and found it hilarious) and I was mortified!

The only thing worse was the caramel apple eating contest where they made mine a caramel onion

I remember I was in the district spelling bee and I got all nervous and decided to spell familiar wrong on purpose so I could go sit down. I absolutely hate being in front of people and almost threw up!

@Mrs. Jacks: Oh, that makes me so sad. I always hated those types of "games" that really targeted and humiliated one person for the sake of laughter. My high school used to do those all the time, and I hated it.

In grade 2 my word was "sister" and I was so cocky and even laughed that my word was so easy. Then I oh-so-cockily said, "s-i-t-e-r" - I didn't say the second "s"!!! I totally got owned. I learned not to be stupidly cocky.

@Honeybee: Once I was in high school things were fine... At that point intellectual pursuits were more highly prized than in grade school
