Last pregnancy I didn't take a single painkiller but this time round I've been sick with colds/infections and have needed to take acetaminophen on several occasions to bring down fever. I figure fever is worse for the baby than the acetaminophen but I still feel really bad! Curious to know how others use painkillers when pregnant...

I voted other because I've never had to take it (mostly because Tylenol does absolutely nothing for me pain-wise) but I definitely would take it to bring down a high fever.

I would not unless absolutely necessary. This is my preference for myself. During one of my pregnancies I had a sinus infection and took Tylenol for almost a week because the pain was so excruciating I could not function otherwise. Of course the week after that studies came out that Tylenol use during pregnancy can increase risks for ADD. I was freaking out but you really do have to think about the risk benefit ratio.

Yes. If doctors tell me something is safe to take I'm not going to suffer with a headache or whatever just to be super duper cautious.

I took Tylenol for headaches and body aches if I needed it. I had two colds while pregnant so I really needed it at times. Probably a total of 10 to 12 times throughout pregnancy I popped 2 regular strength Tylenol. I had no qualms about it.

I had horrible back pain during my second pregnancy. And I had surgery on my hand. So, yes, I took a LOT of tylenol.

With my first pregnancy I was lucky to not have to use any painkillers. This time I'm 19 Ezks along and haven't had to yet. Of course if necessary by doctor's orders I would take some. Fingers crossed it won't be necessary !

Nope.
I had a miserable sinus infection with my third and decided to take it along with my antibiotic Rx and ended up with poor liver function. Big nope over here!

I don't consider acetaminophen a "pain killer" - I was thinking things like prescription painkillers (in that case, no).
Acetaminophen is safe during normal pregnancy - and actually, I was surprised to learn how much was safe during pregnancy. I'm not one to suffer through pain or a headache when there's a safe option to alleviate it.
It's worth noting that Ibuprofen is not safe and should be avoided.
Some people find relief with essential oils.

@peachykeen: There are studies that show that kid's Tylenol isn't effective at pain management ... I wonder if some adults are less affected by that part of the drug too. It helps our LO's fevers, but I almost always opt for Ibuprofen for her since she seems more comfortable.

I voted no not at all. but as long as you stay away from ibuprofen you should be fine acetaminophen. I just happen to be overly cautious when pregnant and I avoid pain killers in general as much as possible

My first pregnancy, I never took anything. This pregnancy, I had a fever that was creeping towards 101 so the nurse advised that I bring it down. I also took it one day when I was having terrible hip/round ligament/pelvic pain. I'm hesitant to take it frequently, but generally I am not in so much pain that I cannot handle it.

I did not take anything, but I also don't recall being sick. If anything I would have wanted painkillers for discomfort.

I take Tylenol when I have a headache. I try a cold rag first. My OB says Tylenol is perfectly safe so I have no problem with it.

I take tylenol as needed. I get horrible hormonal headaches during pregnancy (mostly first tri, when you would worry most about taking meds) and if it's a question of not functioning well, I take it - for myself and my two other kids who have to deal with me. I do have a higher bar for taking it while pregnant, but I don't worry too much.

I did not take any pain killers during pregnancy because I didn't want to have any regret or guilt if my baby was later born with a problem. However, I did do IVF and was on all sorts of meds for that through the first trimester, including baby Tylenol briefly. So despite my best intentions not to take medicines, I was on a whole host of them!

I don't like to take pain meds, even when not pregnant, but I don't hesitate to take Tylenol if I need it. If I have a fever or a bad headache, I take it.

I had bad headaches and my OBGYN told me I could take tylenol whenever I needed to.

I take it for the crazy migraines I get when I'm pregnant. I would not say I take it whenever I feel like it though because I take them more often when I'm not pregnant and try to tough it out more when I am.

i did, when i felt like i needed it, but it wasn't something i did often and did other things (ice packs, supplements, etc) before i did it. i never had fevers pregnant, so i didn't vote for that!

I voted nothing at all, since the only painkiller I ever take is ibuprofen and that's totally off-limits during pregnancy. I don't think Tylenol is a very effective pain reliever.

Wasn't there just a study that came out about how Tylenol was worse than they thought for pregnant women/fetuses?

When I was hospitalized during my second pregnancy (for something non pregnancy related) I was actually given a tiny (I think pediatric) dose of morphine! I was in a lot of pain.

I never had a fever while pregnant, but I take the occasional Tylenol for pain.

I had some killer migraines this pregnancy and had to take Tylenol to help them go away. I had about 5 of them and didn't hesitate to take the Tylenol because otherwise I couldn't function.

@pachamama: yes, I do believe there was a Spanish study linking acetaminophen/paracetamol to ADHD... However from what I understand, the study was flawed in that they did not look at a bunch of other factors which also might link to ADHD... So for now I'm going to keep taking Tylenol as needed!

To be honest, I took quite a bit of Tylenol (in the appropriate dose of course) during my first pregnancy. I had such awful headaches. In this pregnancy, I have taken it for a few bad headaches and once when I was sick and had a fever.
