I'm currently at my OB waiting for my weekly shot. There's a lady who is chatting up anyone who sits near her. Just by listening i know way too much about her pregnancy. I generally stay clear of small talk in the OB office because my small talk about this stuff is depressing. But I generally don't like talking to people in most waiting rooms anyways.

If someone does something funny I might comment and if someone starts talking to me I won't ignore them. However depending on the topic my responses may be short. I guess it really depends on the topic and my mood.

No, I just read a magazine or play with my phone. If someone has a child who tries to engage with me though, I will interact with them I can't turn down a cute toddler who hands me a play phone to answer!

I was at a sports medical clinic the other day, and this guy starts talking to me. "Hey, are you <insert race> by any chance? Yeah, i thought so. My girlfriend is <insert race>. Soo, what are you here for?" Totally inappropriate for a number of reasons!

I always bring my husband and we only talk to each other. Usually people like to try and strike up a complaint party about the wait time. My doctors office is very busy and high in demand so the wait times are usually long.
I don't like to hear people complain and I don't do it myself. I bring a book to kill the time and just enjoy the time to focus on my LO and the excitement with my DH.

@grizz: Seriously! It's not as bad as at the dentist though. I will never understand that... WHY are you asking me a question when your hand is IN my mouth?! My dentist is a long time family friend of DH's family, so he's just constantly chatting and asking questions... ugh

@swurlygurl: I totally agree with you. The worst was this one hygienist who would stop what she was doing so i could answer her million questions. The cleaning took over 1.5 hours!

No way. I am a keep my head down and get it done type of person. I usually find a magazine or shove my nose in my phone while I'm waiting for something. I'll smile at babies and well-behaved toddlers, though.

@Dandelion: No way! I hate talking to strangers ... Especially at the hospital. When I was waiting for my 2 hour gestational diabetes test, a chatty guy sat next to me. He told me all about how his daughter was born without a vaginal opening, a missing kidney, and her anus was where her vagina should have been. Then, he proceeded to tell me about how his wife left him with the baby. Oy!!!
This all started when I was wearing ear buds AND reading a book. I try to make it very obvious that I don't like being talked to, but some people are so desperate for conversation!!

Only if I'm feeling particularly chatty and I think the other person is too. So mostly not-- although once I met a 90y/o lady in the doctors waiting room... she was telling me how lonely it gets at her age and I ended up going to her house a couple of times to visit her and drink tea

I almost never see anyone else in the waiting room at my MW's office, except DH because he comes with me. I don't generally chat at other appointments, but once there was this sweet elderly lady at my PCP who asked about my knitting, and I did talk to her until she was called in. I didn't particularly want to chat, but she was very nice and seemed lonely so I considered it my good deed for the day.
