This guy I share an office with is constantly making very loud weird sucking sounds while he eats or drinks. I thought i had gotten used to his loud slurping and sipping sounds when he drinks coffee in the morning or the way he exclaims "Aaahhhh" after every sip but not he brings extra snacks and candy and sucks away at it all day! Anyone else deal with this?

Sometimes this can be cultural! Japanese are encouraged to slurp soup, for example.

Ugh! This is so irritating! I work with a woman who always eats her meals at the desk, instead of in the break room like the rest of us. Not only that, her food always stinks and smells up the whole work area and she'll take a bite and then try and have a conversation while the food is still in her mouth. It's disgusting. I can hear it squishing around in there and I'm always afraid a piece will fly out at me. Or she'll take a bite of something and then pick and spit what she doesn't like out into a tissue and not even cover it up. Really?! Her eating habits just totally annoy/gross me out if you can't tell. I could go on and on...

I have a loud eater here but it's more the clanking of her spoon to bowl that grates on my nerves. Around 12:30 every day, I hear her warming something up and then clank clank clank. I'm a super sensitive to sound and smell person, so I am sure I notice it more than others. From what my cousins tell me, it seems to run in our family - getting annoyed by loud eaters.
@mrbee: Does that pertain to just Japanese or most Asian cultures? I was working at an Chinese TV station in NYC (Sinovision) a few months ago. The folks I was working with were so kind, they took me out to lunch every day and they made suggestions on what I should get or they got a smorgasbord of food and we all shared. I noticed the slurping during those lunches, though and figured it was a cultural thing.

@mediagirl: I am not sure how it works in China. I remember being told that it's a way to show appreciation for the chef. But I think you're also supposed to not be *too* loud with the slurping!
Slurping does have very real non-cultural benefits: it helps cool down hot soup, and also helps with taste I think.

I live in Japan, the land of noisy eaters. It was really disturbing at first but now I'm used to hearing it. Like Mr.Bee said, Japanese are encouraged to slurp, especially their noodles. Also like mr.bee said, its supposed to help cool down hot food, like ramen.

I do. I never noticed it at first, but a coworker pointed it out to me and now all I notice is this other coworkers smacking his lips when he eats.

@mrbee: He is korean actually so maybe it is a cultural thing? I dont know but it really gets to me. I have other friends who are asian too but dont make those sounds when they eat or drink

@Mrsbells: Koreans can be pretty loud and obnoxious when they eat. You should let him know that his noisy eating is distracting.
I was popping my gum at work one day and my coworker asked me to stop. HAHA. I wasn't offended. Actually felt bad for chewing my gum so loudly. -
@Mrsbells: There are so many factors... like did they grow up in the motherland or in the US.
More and more Asians have assimilated, so it is getting harder to generalize!

OMG! I have a guy that does that, and also smacks his gum VERY loudly. smack smack smack smack smack smack smack smack smack smack
Oh, and the burping!! He lets out these monsterous burps randomly throughout the day.
I can't blame it on culture, unfortunately... he's American.
I have to throw my headphones on to try to drown it out. -
Noisy eaters is probably my biggest pet peeve... One of the few things that truly bothers me and can actually make me angry. Thankfully I am a SAHM and my daughter can usually keep the noises to a minimum.

My parents grew up in Asia and are noisy eaters. I have assimilated and am not noisy. It does really bother the DH when we eat with my parents as he isn't used to it. I have to admit that it bothers me a little, too, since they do not live close by and I hardly ever see them. But growing up, I didn't even notice.

I cannot stand noisy eaters, biggest pet peeve ever, like Cyndistar3 it actually makes me mad. Dh's girls are Japsnese and I have a hard time eating in the same room with them sometimes.
My boss smacks his lips, chews and talks with his mouth full, it's gross.
