My mom had terrible hyperemesis gravidarum in both her pregnancies and was hospitalized because of it while pregnant with my sister. My sister and I have heard horror stories about it for years, but she always told us not to worry because it is not hereditary. Lately I keep reading about it running in families and that they think it might be genetic. My mom's sister was never pregnant and my sister and I aren't yet. Obviously I won't know for sure until I'm pregnant, but I'm curious, does HG run in your family?

I had really horrible morning sickness for my entire pregnancy. It was manageable with Zofran, so I didn't require hospitalization, but it wasn't pretty. My mom had a very easy pregnancy by contrast. I did find out later that my grandma on my dad's side and my aunt (dad's sister) had really bad morning sickness too. So maybe it is hereditary, but it didn't come via my mom's side of the family in my case.

My mom had it with all 3 of her pregnancies and needed to be hospitalized multiple times. I'm 10.5 weeks in to sticky pregnancy #2 and I have gotten MS with both but it's been relatively mild (sick in the mornings or when my stomach is empty but don't throw up often). So there's hope!

I didn't have it but my mom had it with 3 of her pregnancies.

My mom had HG with all 5 of her pregnancies and my sister may have also had it (although she was undiagnosed). I had HG with both of my pregnancies, as well. My mum had it with two of her four pregnancies, two of my sisters had morning sickness badly but only one had it really bad, and I had horrible, horrible sickness. It sucked : (

I had HG, as did my mom and her mom, so I think there is definitely a generic component in my case.

Thanks for sharing everyone. Also thanks for the link @honeybee. It sounds like it does run in some families and other times can be isolated. I'm hoping I'll be lucky and avoid it!!

@mrs. 64: no one had it , ever, in my family but I got it bad! My MIl always had it with every pregnancy so maybe it's from my husband? I dot even know if that's possible but yep: I was the liner in the fam. No one knew how I felt :'(

@skibobrown: I took Zofran too.
Miracle drug.
After my hospitalization (just the one day), my oB made sure to give me Zofran. It stopped the vomiting and the nausea but it didn't help the food aversions.
