Do you drink alcohol while solo parenting?
DH was surprised to hear from me recently that I avoid drinking when I'm solo. He said he doesn't think a drink is a big deal, but I would rather be safe than sorry. My logic is that you never know if there's an emergency situation and I would feel better knowing I haven't had anything.
Anyone else think like this, or more along the lines of my DH?

I'd drink a glass of wine or a beer. If I feel safe driving, I'm comfortable.

@Jess1483: I agree! I don't really drink, but if it was DH I'd be comfortable with it under those kind of limits/circumstances.

never thought of this as any concern! i would have a beer with lunch if i thought to but with two kids it just doesnt cross my mind and then we are onto the next thing!

I do, but it's usually just one drink since I'm typically not alone with him during "drinking hours" much... More of a beer or glass of wine while cooking dinner waiting for DH to get home

I don't so drunk I couldn't handle an emergency, but I'll definitely have a drink or too, especially once she's in bed. My friend and I have also been known to have "happy hour play dates" where we have a glass of wine or two while the kids play (we walk home). I guess two drinks would be my limit.
I'm 22 weeks pregnant and could really use that drink right now!

I don't drink (former alcohol problem), but I wouldn't care if DH had a drink, as long as it was not much. He never gets drunk so I wouldn't worry.

So long as I was still in fine shape to drive, I have no issue drinking while watching DD.

I usually waited until E was in bed (because I wanted to be able to put my feet up, relax and enjoy it), but I have no problem having a drink or two. I never drank so much that I couldn't drive if there was an emergency.

I'll maybe have one beer or glass of wine aftrr they're asleep but that's it. Generally that's all I have anyway because I don't need one extra thing messing with my sleep lol.

I had a beer while making dinner tonight before DH got home, but that's the only time I've ever drank while I was solely in charge. One beer wouldn't make me unable to drive if there was an emergency or anything, but it just makes me a little nervous I guess. When DH is home though I have no problem drinking wine with dinner or a shit ton of champagne with brunch (because I'm so fancy like that 
).

Neither of us drink if we are home alone. I like to be able to think clearly and DH doesn't want the kids to smell alcohol on him.

DH has been gone all week and I have had 1/2 glass of wine every night after DD went to bed. Tonight was rough and I may have started my glass while making dinner.

I definitely wouldn't get drunk, but a glass of wine or two is fine for me. That being said, I live in a city where I don't need to drive. And I have like 4 hospitals within a couple blocks. If I was in the burbs not sure if I'd feel differently.

I'm not a big drinker and I'm nursing so it's a non issue for me. But I wouldn't care if Dh had a drink or two.

Nope, I have a super low tolerance because I'm not a big drinker. I might have one beer a month, if that. So I really see no need to drink before the kids are in bed.
Eta,: and I'm breastfeeding so there are very limited drinking windows to begin with!
Dh wouldn't drink while solo parenting although he is more than capable of being completely lucid after 2 or 3 beers. It's that German Irish upbringing.

I'll sometimes have one drink after DS is in bed if I'm alone, but not more than one. But most of the time if I'm solo by the time he is in bed I'm too tired to even care about having a drink.

@Boogs: I've never thought about that but thinking back to when I was solo parenting I never drank. Not because I was scared of anything happening but rather because I just don't like drinking by myself.

I would have a glass or two of wine, but I don't really like drinking alone, so it's rare. I don't have to worry about driving though if ever there were an emergency.

i totally have a glass of wine or two (or a beer) when solo parenting. never enough to impair me, but DH works 24 shifts, so i need that drink every now and again!

Never when DS is awake, but I will have a drink or two after bed. I don't get so drunk that I can't drive in an emergency but def tipsy!

When I'm not pregnant I would have a glass of wine most nights after putting DS to bed. I don't have a car though so I don't worry about driving. I wouldn't drink enough that I'd be unable to deal with an emergency though.

I'm not one to drink alone, but if I felt like I wanted/needed a glass of wine or a beer I would have one. I don't know how it's any different than me and DH drinking together when the kids are in bed? We are both "impaired" then and I would be more likely to drink more with him than alone! We have a fire station a minute away if it came down to needing an ambulance (not saying we drink often, but if we were with neighbors, ect. it might be the point of not wanting to drive!)

Absolutely. I actually don't drink, but I wouldn't hesitate to. My husband always has a beer with dinner, sometimes two. Maybe one in the afternoon on a weekend. I think that modeling responsible alcohol consumption is extremely important, so I would never want to see it consumed just after bedtime.

I sometimes have a beer or glass of wine before DH gets home - usually it's because LO is taking a long late nap and I know I'll actually get to enjoy it while he's asleep.
I wouldn't want to be incapable of driving in an emergency.

@winniebee: Thank YOU. I was reading this thread last night (with my second glass of wine in hand) and feeling a little guilty. I'm so rattled by the end of the day with two kids when DH is traveling, I definitely need a beverage.

I don't, but there are those days that I wish we kept alcohol in the house so I could have a drink. I'm a lightweight though, so it would only ever be one drink.

I don't drink a lot at home so its sort of a non-issue. I probably have had a glass of wine after bedtime at some point when my husband wasn't home, and would again though. As long as I can drive, NBD.

If I'm not planning to drive anywhere later that day/night (I work some evenings) I'll definitely have a glass or two of beer or wine if it's been a rough day. And often on the less rough days as well.

I don't drink alone, so this doesn't come up, but I don't see a problem with drinking a little as long as it doesn't impair you. I'd do it if it made me feel better and more energetic while I'm dealing with the kids by myself. It doesn't, so I sneak candy in the kitchen instead.
