Could it be????? My 12 month old has started throwing down toys in anger when he doesn't get his way. He flops down to the ground if I try to steer him to walk in a different direction. And horror of horrors, he hit me today.
Isn't he too you g for temper tantrums? Did anyone experience this? Did anything work?

My one year old cracked the screen of my iPhone yesterday throwing it on the floor. I wouldn't say he tantrums exactly, but in the last 2 weeks or so he's definitely gotten stroppy if he doesn't get his way. I can see that its coming.

Yep. Mine is 5 days away from being 12 months, but I'm definitely seeing signs of an attitude!

Sounds right! My almost 15 month old has been expressing is dislike for awhile now (you know, diaper changes, if I don't give him the toy he wants the right way, if he can't walk -he's not walking yet, if he can't play with the big kids, when I don't let him eat dog poop, if I put him in the crib to sleep at nap time, if I'm on the computer etc etc etc)

Yes when I change her outfit or diaper when she is too tired or in a bad mood! It just happened when she turned one!

Yup! J's pulling this too (turned 1 this week). When he doesn't get his way or he doesn't do something he wants to do (like trying to run and falling when he's still working on walking). It is heightened right before bedtime, but it can be any time. Sigh.

I try distracting my LO when I see a flare up coming, but that only works so much. I do my best not to reward the behavior in any way, but that means I have to deal with a lot of crying. And how do you do those things when you're out (and embarrassed)!?

@Orchid: I don't think you should be embarrassed about your child. They are still babies. They don't know how to be rationalized with yet!

@teawithpaloma: I know this in theory ... But in a restaurant when several eyes look over and stare a little, I do feel like I should have more control. I will try to chill out about it though.

ohh yes! my son started tantrums a bit before 12 months. writhing on the floor, screaming, if he doesn't get his way. swatting our hands away. not cool buddy!

My 10 month old started this about two months ago. Lord, help me when he is actually two. We got off easy with his brother.

Dd is now 27 months and has gone through waves of time where she'd have bad tantrums but then they wane out... We try to always be ready or willing to step out with her so if we are in a restaurant and mid-meal, we had to go outside if she started a tantrum. It can be harder if you have an audience because you get so much more stressed and toddlers later want the attention so it's better for everyone to remove toddler from all the eyes if it's possible that is. Yeah tantrums suck and its a surprise that they start so early :(. Some reading on how to deal with toddler behavior in general might find you a few tips, I found reading blogs and books to be very helpful. Hang in there!

I swear my LO started having tantrums at birth! I try not to worry about what other people think about my parenting and work with what works for her. She still has lots of tantrums at 21 months.
