Congrats on the new job!

My department sticks to a “business professional” code, and basically every day I wear a black pencil skirt, black pumps and a long sleeve button-down shirt. Sometimes I will wear a top and cardigan or a colored pencil skirt – but that’s pretty much my uniform!

I buy most of my work clothes from J. Crew, Ann Taylor Loft (they have pretty frequent sales), Banana Republic or sometimes Talbots.

I’m particular on the cut of the button-down shirts; I like a slim/fitted/women’s cut, and a lot of places cut these shirts boxy (Gap, I’m looking at you).

I'd suggest Ann Taylor, h&m, Banana (outlets tend to have pretty good bargains), and gap for classics like cardigans. My old office was bus casual - I wore lots of cardigans with nice tanks under them with dress pants (had slacks in dk and light grey, black, brown, pin stripes).

@woodentulip: @Mrs. Pen: I work for a publishing company doing all online marketing. It seems to be stuck in the 50s, as women are required to wear skirts/dresses with nylons and the men are only allowed to wear suits with white or off white shirts. I wish I was joking.

My work wardrobe was 3 pairs of dress pants from the limited (black, gray, light brown), one black pencil skirt from the limited, 2 blazers/suit jackets from walmart (1 plaid, 1 black), 2 shprt sleeve blouses from the limited, a few random button downs from thrift shops (j.crew habedashery is my favorite one), and some random cardigans from tj maxx. Plus, a nexklace and earings and a few random dresses that I have. I worked in a very conservative office where I had to wear a suit a few times a week for meetings. Plus, we weren't allowed to wear khakis, denim of any kind, or any shirts below the collarbone (which was inpossible!).

@Mrs. Pen: Even though I'm short, all my height is in my legs so I actually have a similar problem with skirts too!! I've actually gotten a couple really cute skirts at H&M. Otherwise, Banana Republic and Express both make some pencil skirts that are on the long side and don't seem to ride up too much.

@LuLu Mom: I used to work at an office that required women to wear skirts/dresses with hose. Luckily I prefer skirts anyway, but yeesh.

I wear a lot of solid color shirts with neutral bottoms or cardigans/sheath dresses. My office is business/business casual/casual (depending on your department). I like to go to consignment stores in the well-to-do areas for my work clothes, since most of those have been worn once and are great prices for designer/name brands.

@yoursilverlining: I don't mind the skirt at all, it's the hose that I want to get rid of! No one should be required to wear them in 100 degree heat when they are 9 months pregnant! ha I finally just stopped and pretty much was daring HR to confront me!
