LOs 4th birthday is coming up soon. I plan to take in cupcakes to her preschool and then give out favor bags. I have been looking at some of the favor kits at party city and I think it's the fastest option. I'm torn on whether I should build my favor buckets from scratch or buy a kit.
They have a mermaid ultimate kit which is $40 for 8 kids. I would need to get two kits. What would you do

For that much money, I would be tempted to make something. For LO's 4th this year, we are doing I-spy bottles for the kids. For preschool, you could do favor cups with a few little baubles in them.

As an after thought, the dollar store and 99 cents stores here have a lot of mermaid/princess stuff recently.

@MaisyMay: that's true, they do have a cheaper option which will be kit in a bag or cup. But since party city has a coupon going on now I can save some money...

I always find great stuff for favor bags at the Dollar store - coloring books, stickers, puzzles, etc. I think it would be cheaper that way, but I totally get that if you buy the ready made one it will save you time both assembling and shopping!

I was going to say the same as @Mamaof2: . DD1 has never gotten favor bags from daycare/preschool!
But if it's common at yours, for that much $$ I would build my own. How many kids? -

No way would I spend $80 on junk for daycare bags!
We did favor bags for school because we didn't do a birthday party. We took a small craft into school, cupcakes (well really mini brownies) and then passed out treat bags that were just a pack of goldfish, a pack of cookies, and a stencil and pencil.

@Mrsbells: another idea - for DD's 5th birthday I gave out mylar balloons - our Dollar store had Frozen ones so I got 14 for $14! The kids LOVED them!!!

I've never heard of this for preschool birthday parties! I would probably just make them myself - $5 a bag seems a little high?

Well, depending on how much time I had to do it myself (which would be 0), I would get the kits.
FWIW we had a few situations when my son was in daycare where people did a party at daycare, as opposed to offsite. I didn't know it was a thing until we got a note home where it said that the parents were bringing in lunch to celebrate so and so's birthday. My son came home with favor bags which he thinks are the greatest thing in the world.

My kids love favor bags from preschool! I think our favorites were: small sticker book, tub of playdough, coloring book+ pencils or crayons. And these were just with a couple treats. I would probably make my own just like that but if you're short on time there's nothing wrong with buying the kit.

@Mrsbells: we didn't do this for daycare but for party favor bags I was impressed with the choices Amazon had. Lots of multipacks like oriental trading but free and fast shipping with prime. Plus you don't have to leave the house!

While I agree that DS loves a good favor bag when he brings it home from school, he immediately forgets about it about an hour later and I end up throwing it out. They always just seem like such a waste to me. But I know I'm a total party pooper when it comes to favor bags. For DS's last birthday, I donated a few books to his classroom since we're not allowed to bring in food to school.

@Mrsbells: That is a lot of money for favor bags! I got some things for DD's party from Target's dollar spot and party aisle. They had some fun crazy straws, light up bouncy balls, and glasses. Our preschool doesn't do anything like this though, so I have no idea what is expected at the norm at your school.

@MUI831: I was going to suggest a book per kid as a favor. At $5 a kid, my DD would be just as excited to get a book versus a favor bag where she will love in the moment but all the pieces will be gone quickly!

Thanks everyone. I ended up going in to party city today and they had some of their character birthday stuff for 50% off. I got some fun goodie bags plus lots of things to go in them, includding a 44pack of welches fruit snacks, marshmallow twists all for $30 and I will have a lot of things things left over for LO to play with for a while

I always appreciate when other parents do NOT give my child favor bags. My daughter has so many little toys that she gets really attached to and inevitable loses. I prefer disposable little treat things that we don't have to keep track of- little things of bubbles, stickers, small bags of goldfish, crayons, etc. I think for $80 you could get A LOT of stuff and put together an awesome treat bag pretty easily with a trip or two to the Dollar Tree or Target.

I saw on your update that you already picked them up, but for daycare favors we have received 1 slightly more substantial (but still inexpensive) item and we've liked those. We got a Little Mermaid coloring kit from the Target dollar spot once and a set of magnetic letters from the dollar store another time.
