There's an upcoming team building Habitat event that I don't want to miss. I'll be 11 weeks at the time. My husband is worried about every darn thing and thinks I should cancel.
Did anyone do a Habitat project while pregnant? How was it?

I can't think of any reason other than fatigue or morning sickness why you shouldn't go. If you feel up to it, you should go, and if necessary you can make some accommodations to your activity (e.g., don't lift especially heavy objects). Your pregnancy will feel really long if you sequester yourself like that. What is your husband so worried about? Can you ask him and figure out how to address his concerns?

As long as you aren't climbing up on a roof or doing particularly heavy lifting I don't see why this would be an issue if you feel up to it.

I didn't attend anything like that, but I've used plenty of power tools, painted, etc., while pregnant. My "shop" is in my non climate controlled garage and I spent a lot of June and July out there. I think you'll be fine if you keep yourself hydrated, take breaks as needed, and listen to your body. If you feel like you're pushing yourself too far then stop.

I can't imagine why you should go, especially since you'll only be 11 weeks. Only thing I would avoid is anything that involves heavy fumes like painting/staining.

@ElbieKay: IDK what his deal is, but he's even against me using nail polish remover. I sometimes wish he was carrying this baby because his constant worry is driving me bonkers. With Habitat specifically he'said worried about paint (easy fix) then it was nails because "everything they use is refurbished and the nails will be rusty."
I feel fine though and am the first one to cry uncle when something doesn't feel right.

Can you ask your doctor to explain to your husband the importance of doing your best to remain empowered and active? It's going to be a long pregnancy if he stays so stressed out.

I think it's cute your husband is so concerned! Sometimes you just have to encourage them when they want to participate actively in the pregnancy!

While I didn't actually do this, I would have zero concerns about doing a Habitat build while pregnant.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I think you need to ask your doctor to weigh in. Assuming there is no medical issue then you need to press your husband to explain why he is so concerned. You can't be held hostage to your pregnancy just because he is feeling anxious, but maybe you can help him articulate his reasons or educate him on why this isn't such a ridiculous thing for you to do.

As long as you're not up on the roof, I can't think why it would be an issue. Habitat is pretty good about finding a job for everyone, whatever their current abilities and restrictions. And, like anything, if you get tired, just take a break! Maybe bring along some of your own snacks/drinks so that you have access to them if you're hungry/thirsty before everyone else breaks for lunch.

Unless you are doing super physical house-building piece of it, this shouldn’t really be physically much different than so many regular, physical activities. Plenty of women work out, lift weights (even if you just count hauling older babies and toddlers around!), pack up and move house during pregnancies, etc. and all of those activities are normal and safe. If you are hammering nails, you can certainly wear gloves to protect your hands generally.
If your husband really pushes, you might want to have him talk to your doctor about his specific concerns. Pregnancy isn’t a disability and you’ve got to be able to live your life! “cute” concerns can get “not cute” real quick – for both of you. He shouldn’t spend the next 9 months stressed out either!

Oh man, my husband was like that when I was pregnant! He wouldn't let me carry the vacuum upstairs. I had to smack some sense into him!
I agree with PP...as long as there's no heavy lifting or strong fumes you should be fine!

@MrsSRS: @yoursilverlining: I purposely brought up some things when we went to the doctor and as soon as we left (at the elevator) he went right back to his crazy ideas. The doctor drank 20 oz of coffee when she was pregnant, so my husband was already thinking her decisions we're questionable and that made it way easy for him to dismiss her sound advice. I'm just going to have to do what I always do and just tell him when he's wrong and do what works for me. Even with the food stuff, his research just pointed to too many restrictions and it wasn't realistic. My doctor mentioned a handful of things to be cautious about. That's it. Bacon is back!
I am really happy to see no one thinks the Hab event will be a problem. I'm really excited to see some of these co workers in person vs swapping emails.

Heck yeah, I would totally do it. I wouldn't get on a ladder or scaffolding or anything crazy. I also wouldn't hole up in a room being painted with VOC laden paint and the windows closed. In other words, use your discretion and have fun! What a great thing to spend time with your team on!

You are in for a long-ass pregnancy, girl. Relax (and tell your husband to do the same). Don't huff paint and lay on a bed of rusty nails and you'll be fine.

I went on a Habit build with my best friend who was 8 weeks pregnant. In Vietnam. We slept on the floor and did brick mortar all day and she did fantastic. I say go for it!

I did Habitat for Humanity a couple of times while I was pregnant. It was summer, so I was between 5 and 7 months pregnant. No problems at all. And made sure to not carry anything too heavy.
