@swedishfish: I want some sushi so badly! Of course you crave exactly what you can't have!

I ate raw sushi like it was my job while pregnant. Per my OB, I just made sure it was from a reputable place and watched my mercury intake.

@rahlyrah: Ditto. My doc had no issues with sushi as long as it wasn't high mercury or from the local scary grocery store sushi bar.

@BlueWolverine: @rahlyrah: @Dandelion: Huh! I always thought it was an automatic no-no. I guess I should ask my OB next time I see her!
The problem is how do I know if a place is good... Just b/c it got an A? Technically I'd say places I frequent are up to my standards...

@snowjewelz: I went to a reputable place and told them I was pregnant. They used fresh/ separate boards and everything (for no cross contamination with raw) and I got cooked crab (California). It was really nice!

I mostly ate veggie sushi (cucumber/avocado rolls) and occasionally cooked sushi. I eat the veggie kind normally, though, so it wasn't necessarily a substitute -- I just didn't have raw fish along with it like I normally would. Never even gave a thought to hands and counters, but I don't think it would have stopped me anyway.

@snowjewelz: If you go to a place a lot and have never gotten sick off their food, they're fine.

@Greentea: Oh that's really nice that they made sure to make you feel comfortable eating there!

@snowjewelz: is there a Tai Show near you? I love the Tai Show near me and trust them completely.

@snowjewelz: I just stuck with my normal sushi places. I've went to them for years and have never gotten sick or had any sketchy fish. I live on the east coast so most of the places around here are reputable.

This thread is making me feel brave...I want sushi so bad, but have stuck to the cooked stuff so far. I think I will have to go get my fix once I'm out of the first trimester

I ate cooked once so far this pregnancy.
@snowjewelz: if you're brave enough I'm sure there are plenty of really reputable places near you.
But "reputable" is relative... Some people think supermarket sushi is reputable. We have SO many sushi places here but there's probably only 1 or 2 places I trust.

I had tempura and veggie rolls once during pregnancy. I mentioned to the waitress that I was pregnant and asked to keep the raw stuff separate from my plate. She told me she would and they would also prep the rolls in a completely different area.

I ate all the sushi when I was pregnant. Just from the place I've gone to for years not like...gas station sushi or anything.

Omg you ladies are brave. I didn't dare when I was pregnant! I didn't think to ask them to prep things in a different area & with different boards/knives.

I haven't yet, but I will (avocado rolls, shrimp tempura, etc).
I imagine that most reputable sushi places are actually much more clean/sanitary than many average restaurants, where things have inadvertently touched raw chicken, etc

Skipped all for pregnancy 1 and ate all kinds for pregnancy 2.

totally. I had eel and california rolls throughout, and I had a very healthy girl!

@autumnlove: Same. I kind of don't buy into the pregnancy food recommendations. First time mom, I was super careful but as I paid attention to the news, listeria outbreaks were due to lettuce and garden burgers which made me suspect. I think a balanced diet is most important!

I ate tempura and eel rolls mostly. I think next time, I will eat raw sushi too, as long as it's from a reputable place.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who's OB okayed sushi! It's something I get eyebrow raises for, but during the first trimester it was about all I could eat. I stick to low mercury fish based on this list my OB gave, like salmon and shrimp, and make sure it's from a reputable place. So far it hasn't caused any issues!

Add another to the list who ate raw fish sushi while pregnant. The cooked just doesn't do it for me; and my OB ok'd sushi. Like she said, it isn't like women in japan stop eating sushi for 9 months, and it can preped just as freshly and safely here!

I have been eating sushi with this pregnancy while I have been both in the US and Japan as well with no problems. Just be mindful of the types you eat to watch your intake for mercury. As others have said just make sure you go somewhere reputable that you've never gotten sick from.
I was also warned by my dr in Japan to not over do it with eel, while it is cooked and does not have a high mercury content unlike fish, I guess eel has a lot of vitamin A. I'm pretty sure you would have to eat a whole lot though to reach that threshold though...

I ate veggie rolls, maybe cooked-- I definitely would have, but the place near work had a veggie combo that I liked. I never asked for special prep, but I had eaten there plenty of times so I wasn't too worried. I would have been too nervous to get raw fish, though I'm sure it would be fine.
@lauraeabel: You ate sushi during the first trimester? All I could stomach was super duper processed crap-- like, a freshly grilled chicken breast was icky but chicken patty was delicious. Even better were mashed potatoes and fries. I'm impressed.

@swedishfish: Hmm never heard of them! I rarely get sick eating anything.. I have an iron stomach
@sandy: @locavore_mama: Yeah, I think I def need to order a tempura roll soon to satisfy my craving though! I have never gotten sick eating raw fish, but I'm still nervous!
@theotherstark: That's a good way of thinking about it! I feel the same way haha, esp w/ fast food or something!
@yoursilverlining: That's what I kept telling DH haha!

I ate all kinds while pregnant. I craved sushi bad. Just watch out for high mercury fish and make sure that the place you're eating at is clean and uses fresh ingredients.

I eat cooked probably twice a month, I need a fix one way or another!

I continue to eat raw sushi that is low in mercury, mostly salmon. I also eat eel and shrimp sushi.
There's actually more risk of getting e.coli from hamburger meat than there is from getting sick from sushi.
I've actually done a lot of research on this topic and the risk of sushi is overblown if you eat from a good place. In Japan, the women continue to eat sushi regularly while pregnant.

I don't think I have yet this pregnancy, but I think it's totally safe to eat cooked sushi while pregnant. I don't worry about it being prepared in the same area as the raw stuff. If you go to a good place (and let's be honest, with sushi you should!), I trust that they are cleaning the work spaces.
