My roommate and I clogged the pipes with tampons once. Her dad was our landlord so didn't make us pay (but it was awk!). I never flush tampons anymore!
So on a lighter note--one of my friends has a guy roommate. Their landlord blamed them for clogging the pipes because the roommate was, um, pleasuring himself too often in the shower. For real.

@raintreebee: Oh. My. God. How could they even tell that THAT was causing it!?

@raintreebee: OMG!!!!!!!!! WHAT?!?! Did he also tell him he will go blind

@raintreebee: Well, that will clog the pipes pretty badly. Not sure how the heck you'd prove it though.

@raintreebee: omg
For what it's worth, I've always flushed tampons, and I belive sewer maintenance outside of gross tenant misconduct is the responsibility of the landlord. I'd be pissed.

@winniebee: I just flushed an entire box of tampons down the toilet in solidarity
Hope you hear some good news soon!

@Torchwood: wait, umm...what? Are you serious? That sounds like some kind of urban legend.
I had no idea this would turn out into such a lively debate!

Growing up, my parents had an RV that had a septic system. My sister and I would always clog it up with tampons and my Dad would keep not be happy when he had to clean out the septic hose on account of our "firecrackers"!
I don't flush them anymore these days...I've lived several places where I don't think the plumbing can handle it. I don't think you should have to pay on account of the tampons though. Flushing wipes on the other hand seems no bueno...I think it would be fair for you to pay a portion based on that.
ETA: someone asked what you do with poopy wipes? I throw them in an old grocery bag and then put them in the diaper Dekor.

@Happygal: No, I've discussed it with my husband before. It's not water soluble. Clogged pipes in men's dorms is a fairly common problem.

No to be a jackass, but I had to investigate the semen thing and it sounds like the "semen clogging dorm plumbing" thing is a prank. @Torchwood, maybe that's where your husband had heard of it?

@shopaholic: Ha ha, no kidding!
@78h2o: He says the reason he prefers not to ah, take care of himself in the shower is that it just gets sticky and doesn't rinse well, hence him saying it's not water soluble. I heard the dorm thing independently and asked him (which is why we've had this conversation, in case you're wondering). Now I want to ask the guys at game night what they think!
