My dad is s republican, my mom is kind of middle of the road. I was raised more conservative than party-specific. Went to college pretty apathetic and learned pretty quickly that apathetic wouldn't cut it... I am definitely a liberal democrat!

I was very liberal when I went to college, turned hardcore Democrat while I was in college, then worked IN Democratic politics for many years, and then became mostly an independent.

Washington became much more polarized while I was there, but then it went off the rails after I left and now each party has just become complete funhouse mirror versions of themselves.

I would say I'm much more pragmatic than idealistic now, more fiscally conservative than I used to be, and diverge from both parties on a lot of social issues. (I'm a first generation immigrant, an ethnic minority, a spouse in an interracial marriage, an evangelical Christian who believes strongly in social justice issues and charity, a frugal mom who strives to be debt free, and an attorney, so yeah, I'm sorta everywhere...)

I've been saying for years and years that our generation tends to be a lot more socially liberal and fiscally conservative while being far more likely than previous generations to give charitably of their own accord, both domestically and internationally. Neither party is tapping into that demographic and none of the policies being put forth support that kind of thinking, so yeah, we end up with totally crazy options like Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump.

Ugh.

My parents never really talked about politics growing up. They tend to vote for democrats, but were never vocal about it. In college I became interested in politics then went to law school and became even more interested. I'm a democrat but I wouldn't say it's because of my parents. I did my own research and came to my own conclusions.

My parents are mostly democrats, but I think I'm more liberal than they are. I'm very socially liberal and have gotten more so as I've gotten older. I've also gotten more fiscally liberal as I've come to believe that by helping the less fortunate, we help society as a whole.

My parents were both politically moderate, though my mom was a registered Republican and my dad was a registered Democrat. But their views weren't really that different. They didn't try to guide my political views at all, though. I've always been more liberal than either of them, though I don't consider myself a "hardcore" Democrat. I'm more of a left-leaning Independent. I haven't changed much; my parents, on the other hand, have drunk some of the Tea Party Kool-Aid and we don't really talk politics anymore because things get contentious. I don't see them often enough to spend that precious time being frustrated with each other.

@gingerbebe: Very similar here feeling like I'm all over the place! I'm a member of a minority group, in an interfaith marriage, Jewish (so social justice and charity come hugely into play here), strongly liberal on a couple of specific issues, but otherwise very conservative in my viewpoints, and anti-debt.

My parents never talked about politics when I was growing up. I knew they voted because they took us with them. The older I get the more interested in politics I become. I'm pretty sure my political beliefs are opposite of my family's.

Raised by a Democrat father and non-interested mother, in solid Democrat Connecticut. Became an evangelical Christian and attended one of the most conservative evangelical colleges in the country, and moved to pretty conservative Arizona. Maintained my beliefs as a firm Democrat. The only part of their platform I have never agreed with is the legality of abortion.

I was raised democrat in a very conservative area and I'm still staunchly democrat.

I was raised Republican, but as time went on changed my views to more liberal. Now I usually vote Democrat as I agree with most of their policies/ideals, believe in social justice/government healthcare/etc., but I still don't agree with abortion (but think it should be legal as women have the right to access one safely rather than in a back alley).

@Mrs. Lion: Its funny, I grudgingly lean more Democratic and my husband leans more Republican, just because that was the party each of us was affiliated since always, but when it comes down to it, we agree on most issues 99% of the time. Its just like, when it comes down to a really close call, I will probably lean towards more government help and he would be like eh, why bother.

My family was never very political. It wasn't until I was older that I figured out my mom is republican. I was definitely more democratic through high school and college. After being in the workforce it has influenced my political views. I am socially democratic, but lean more towards economically republican. I usually end up voting democratic, but have voted republican a couple times. My vote will go more republican if they are more middle candidates.

My mother is very conservative/Republican and my father was generally apathetic regarding politics. My parents didn't really instill any of their political thoughts into their children. We are all very much liberal Democrats and I lean more towards being a Social Democrat.

I was raised with parents who weren't very vocal about their political leanings, and have found out they voted for the candidate and not the party. They voted for Clinton, W, and my mom voted for Obama for his first term (my stepdad did not). Since I've been of voting age, I've always voted Republican, and definitely identify as a conservative Republican.

My parents are fiscal conservatives but socially fairly moderate to liberal. My mom is a pro-choice Catholic. My husband and I are liberal Democrats although I am a registered Republican because I prefer to vote in their primary (not to mess with the results but to pick someone I truly believe could be a good President if my team doesn't win the general election.).
