How big is your ideal house? How does that compare with where you live today?
My friends are moving to an area with much cheaper housing. I was shocked by the size house they want. I don't know how big would go if money wasn't the constraint.

Our current home is 2,400 square feet and feels perfect unless we're hosting a large number. I'd love to have a small basement bonus room for those times to give all the kids a place to run.

Unless it came fully staffed, I think I could only do 2000, maybe 2500 sf - which seems HUGE from the 700sf we're in now, haha
I can't clean more than 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms and I'd be very comfortable with less.

Ours is around 3600 sq ft and we plan on being here a LONG time. We are also thinking about having 4 kids, so it will be plenty of room for us to grow into.

3000 sq ft is perfect for us. We moved recently to that size house and I'd be happy here until the kids are off to college. 3500+ Sq ft size houses here are in the millions which is absolutely ridiculous but even if we had the money I feel like its too big!

I definitely think there's such a thing as too much space- in terms of area to clean and waste of resources to heat/cool (in my opinion). I would like to have 3 kids and I think 2500 sf is more than enough.

Our house now is 3000 square feet and that is plenty big, but I would prefer a different layout. When we were looking I actually wanted a smaller home with a better layout. Our upstairs is frustrating to me. It's much bigger than we need, then our smaller family room, located off the kitchen is really small.

I prefer smaller and really well laid out. 1500-2000 sq ft would be plenty, especially with a basement.

We recently moved into a house that's just under 3,500 square feet. At times, it feels big coming from a much smaller condo where we were squashed in a 2 bed, 2 bath with 4 people. Other times, it's just right. We have enough room for DH's office, a guest room, and rooms for the kids. I'm liking it so far.

Our apartment is about 1500 sqft. I would love a bit more space for a guest room/office and storage. But yeah, the budget for that in the same neighborhood isn't going to happen!

My current home is about 1,000 square feet - way too small! grew up in a 2100 square foot home that had a bonus room. I'd love about 2,500 square feet with a yard that is at least 6,000 square feet. Its tough to find in a decent price range where I live.

I voted 3000. The one we just bought is 3200 (one part of basement if finished, but that's not included) and some areas are bigger than we need and some are a little smaller, so I think it will be great!

Our house is 2300 sq ft and there's plenty of room. The only thing I wish is that it had more, smaller bedrooms. It's 3 bedrooms and two of them are way bigger than they need to be! I wish there were split into smaller rooms. But the amount of space is good.

2000-2200 is my ideal with 3 kids. I don't want any more space than that!
honeydew / 7917 posts
My current is 1950, and I could use less space. Too much to clean! 1500 would be ideal for me. Maybe less.
pomelo / 5660 posts
Our house is 4000 square feet and it feels too big sometimes. I am sure once all 3 kids are living here it won't feel as big. I would not buy a larger house.
pomelo / 5000 posts
I didn't vote b/c it really depends. I've been in homes that are smaller in square footage, but they are well laid out and decorated in a way that feels perfect. On the flip side, I've been in large homes that are dark and cluttered and make me feel claustrophobic!
I like 4 bedroom (one serving as a home office) and at least 1.5 baths. And a big yard that can be fenced in!

Our house is just under 2700 and it's definitely plenty big. I hate the waste. Once LO gets older and into her own bedroom it will be fine, but we definitely do not need this much space.
Layout makes a huge difference too. Our house is well laid out, which is part of the reason why we could do the same layout with less square feet.
ETA: at over $600/month in the late fall, all winter and early spring to heat, I don't want any additional space to heat! And that's with shutting off heat to 2 of the bedrooms upstairs!

Enormous, please! I get so jealous when I see pictures of your spacious American houses. We live in a terraced house with two bedrooms and a box room, and one bathroom. Its about 1000sq ft (not small by UK standards). DH and I often punch the value of our tiny house into Right Move USA and search what we could get in various states - and dream!
As long as I could afford to give up work and clean all day, I will have a mansion please!

floor plan & room sizes are as big of a factor as overall house size, i think. plus whether a finished basement has the egress to "officially" count in the square footage or not!
our old house was like 1700 sq ft and was a good size...but the family room was not a good layout/size for entertaining and it had no basement.

Ours is about 3300, with 4 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, an office and a sunroom (which we use as a playroom). We definitely don't need anything larger, our living room is so big that it's kind of awkward. But the kids' bedrooms are pretty small (11x13ish). In my dream world I would like a better/larger mudroom than we have, and I'd like a real laundry room instead of a laundry closet.
But overall our house is amazing and I can't complain about it. I still feels pretty big to me after coming from a really badly laid out townhouse. But after LO2 arrives I think it'll feel a lot smaller with all the baby gear out, plus toddler stuff.

Our current house is 1,400 square feet and I honestly couldn't imagine having to deal with over 2,000. My house collects enough crap as it is.

Ideally, 3500 to 4000 Sq ft, but that seems enormous to me right now. A really great layout makes all the difference.

2500 seems perfect to me. Eventually anyway, once we have two kids. Right now our current 1450 sq ft house is perfect. I definitely think there is such a thing as too big. My parents live in a frikking airplane hangar sized house, just the two of them. The heating bills!

Ours is 2400 and size wise is great but we have limited storage and only 3 bedrooms. I'd like one more room
cantaloupe / 6131 posts
Our current house is 1950 sq. feet with 3 bedrooms, a den, and 2 baths. I think that's enough for just our family for living with 2 kids, but DH also works from home so the den is used as a home office instead a play space for the kids. We also have relatives staying or wanting to stay all the time, so an extra bedroom would be lovely. So I think we'd like our forever house to be 4 full bedrooms, plus a dedicated office and a rumpus room, or 5 bedrooms plus a dedicated office. We also have a garage fridge and freezer so we would need a 3 car garage, which we currently have. We've seen some 3200+ sq ft plus homes in our area with a library and a den with a 3 car garage and 4-5 bedrooms and I think that would be the ideal.

Currently in 3000 sq feet and it's too much to clean and upkeep. When we move again, I would like around 1800 sq feet. I don't want to spend my day cleaning (and also don't want to spend money on a cleaner)
grapefruit / 4731 posts
We are in a 1550 sqft place but it's a 3-story townhouse. It has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms ... all the bedrooms are pretty small and so are the bathrooms and the main living space. I think it's actually a good size for us. I would be happy if this ended being our forever home.
That being said if this is not our forever home, we do hopefully want to move to a single family home for various reasons such as parking issues and not to have to climb so many stairs. If we were to move I would ideally like something 500-1000 sqft bigger with hopefully an extra living room or bedroom. If this doesn't happen we would be happy with our place for a long time.
If you are curious why we wouldn't move is because prices be crazy in the bay area and I don't want to be in debt for my whole life. Haha.

Our current house is 1008 square feet, with 3 bedrooms and 1.5 bathrooms. Its an alright layout, but is pretty tight with 4 people. Ideally, we'd like to double our square footage. Our perfect house would have bigger rooms all around, 3+ bedrooms, 2 full baths, a den/family room/bonus room, and more storage.

current apartment is 1000 sq ft. When we buy a home, I want it to be 2000-2500, but I would ideally like 2500-3000 (but that's pretty big, even for our area and I'd be fine with closer to the 2000 sq ft range).
I also think that layout has a huge part to play. If the house is 3000 sq ft, but poorly designed, then it can feel small. But a 2000 sq ft house that has a nice flow can feel large and more inviting.
I have a very large family (5 siblings, three of us are married with kids, my parents, and extended family...) and I'd love to be able to host holidays at my home someday, so that's partly why I want a little extra space in a home I buy.

Our house is 2200 and I think it's a good size. I probably wouldn't want anything over 2500.

we are currently renting a 1000 sq ft home and it's been tight for a while. I'd say my ideal would be 2200-2500, but we found an amazing home at a great price at 2900 sq ft that we close on Monday. On paper the layout and space is perfect for our family, but we will see how it feels after we move in!

We are in 1400 + finished basement, I would like to add another 1K with a fully finished basement with bathroom/bedroom, toy room, family room, bar. I would also like a more open floor plan. I don't need huge, I want well laid out with 4 bedrooms.
nectarine / 2521 posts
Our house without the basement is 2400 and it's perfect for us. An office, a playroom and open floor plan. We have a finished basement that I think we will grow into, but for now it will be a space for guests to stay when they visit. We have basically sealed it off for now, which is crazy to me since our last house was 1700 square feet and we used every inch.

We are in 2500 sqft but it isn't ideal for what we need NOW. Now that we've lived here for a few years, I think it would be perfect for a family with older kids, but with young kids we aren't using the space efficiently. I would love an extra room downstairs to serve as an exercise space. We don't have anything like that now.
GOLD / papaya / 10166 posts
I would normally say about 2000-2500, but we have 3000 right now and it's perfect. We have a 1.5 story, where the upstairs is about 400 sq ft of open space, plus a 1/2 bath. We made that into a playroom for the girls and it has been so nice to have a large, well lit place for them to have all their toys and books.
The downstairs is 4 beds + office and 3 full baths, so each girl has a room and we still have a guest bedroom for out of town guests. We live in TX, so there aren't any basements, so we use every inch that we have.
pomelo / 5789 posts
Current house is 3000 Square ft. Ideal house would be 4000. I would prefer an extra bedroom, and a bigger master closet.
grapefruit / 4545 posts
Our current home (our second home) is 3,000 sq ft. It feels like a great size. Its 4 bedrooms (we will have 2 kids - plus need a guest bedroom for our extended out of town family) and an office - which was the main reason we moved from our first home.
We'd like a little more space - but really if we could reconfig the house to make the kitchen bigger we could be happy with the sq footage.
We would like to add a third car garage...thats the only big thing missing - next to my dream kitchen!
pomelo / 5129 posts
Our old house was 900 sqf and WAY too small for DH and I, but it was a three story townhouse and space was wasted because of that. We really only "lived" in 600 sqf because we didn't use the basement.
We moved to a single floor home with twice as many bedrooms and bathrooms but only like 300 more sqf, and it's almost too big. We rarely use half the house (three of the bedrooms). But the living areas make so much more sense since they're more open.
I think layout matters a lot when considering if something is "big enough"
grapefruit / 4770 posts
We just built our first house, and it's 2300 sq ft. Coming from our 1100 sq ft apt, it's a dream!!! We both grew up in 2500-3000 sq ft, so it's what I'm comfortable with. Layout was important to us, and it took us much longer to save being in the DC area, so we had plenty of time to look at lots of houses and know what layout would be right for us! We could easily have 3 kids comfortably in this house. The only thing extra I would want is an additional seperste bedroom for my mom since she nannies for us, and if we had 3 kids we would possibly lose the seperste bedroom for her. But, since I definitely don't want more than 2, she has her own seperste bedroom, and we will be good here for a long while!
