My LO will probably be too young to "help" with the new baby.
How did you make your older LO feel special around a needy newborn?

How old will your older one be? My kids are 23 months apart. One of the earliest things my older one helped with was getting me the clean diaper during diaper changes.

DD actually had a lot of "special time" with extended family.. Outings, etc . I don't think she even noticed DS until a lot of that ended and I went back to work. Not sure if you have family she can do fun things with?

We really talk up being a big girl. We tell DD that DS is a baby and she has to show him how to do everything. We also point out every time she gets to do something unassisted because she's big and we ask her to help her little brother because he's so little and helpless. She loves being a big kid and a big helper!

@Honeybee: ditto this!
She was 21 months when we brought M home and even at that age, she was great at fetching burp cloths and comforting sister. To this day, when M cries she runs up to her and says, "I'm right here little one." and runs her head or face. It's really cute!

@Honeybee: btw she talked about her "new friend" a lot yesterday and kept saying "she's really nice!"

@Mrs. Jacks: DD has been asking to go to "Lala and Catch's" house. Unfortunately H showed up with a high fever yesterday so i think it'll be next week before we can get together.

@Honeybee: yikes! I think it would be too soon for him to get M's cold, but of you need a ped near where you live, let me know and I can make recs. I'll feel really awful if we got him sick!
Sorry to thread hijack!

@Mrs. Jacks: I don't think it was M. Even though he's a little congested, it's really the fever that's the issue. I clocked him in at 102.5 this morning. I figured i'd give it until tomorrow and then asm you for a rec.

Mine are 22 months apart. My husband spends a lot of alone time with my son which helps a lot. It's also nice because I can rest with the baby! Also, I take my son to his Gymboree classes which he loves, and either leave the baby at home if someone is there or take the baby in a sling. We also warned our family members to try and focus on our son and not go straight to the baby when they come over.

@sloaneandpuffy: Oooh, good idea about the warning! I think most of my family will be very baby centric!

Mine are 21 months apart. I pump a lot so dh can take care of the baby while I play and spend time with dd.
newborns sleep a ton so I've been able to spend a lot of time with my dd even when my husband is out of town
