Let's say one of your friends sends you a message a few days before your anniversary or birthday and says Happy Birthday or Happy Anniversary. What do you say in response?
I just say thank you because it's the thought that counts!

@mediagirl: This just happened to me this year! I say thank you too unless they ask a birthday-specific questions (like, "What are you doing today?") and then I'll tell them the real date.

Depends on the context although I don't think this has ever happened to me. I feel like most of the time I would just say thank you and leave it at that. If the conversation continued like, "Doing anything fun for it tonight?" I might say something like "The actual day is Thursday, so we are going out to dinner then!".

Happened to me today. My MIL always gets my birthday wrong. She gave me a card the day of my birthday and said "sorry this is early." And then texted me today, happy birthday. I just say thank you and move on. She messes it up every year. Sometimes she's early, sometimes late.

If it's only a few days away I say thanks. If it was like months off, I would correct them.
