I'm a teeny bit anal about separating laundry.... I do:
Whites
Lights
Brights
Darks
Blacks
Light Towels
Dark Towels
Bedding
DH's work clothes
I hang dry a lot of clothes and will wash a load of whites/lights, lights/brights or darks/blacks separately, but dry together with their nearest neighbour.

I mix it all up, usually just darks and lights. But I usually have enough linens/towels for their own load (they're all light), so I would say darks, lights and linens.

Cloth diapers
Baby clothes- special detergent
Darks
Jeans if there's lots otherwise they go in darks
Lights
Towels/kitchen towels/bibs
Sheets- these don't have a bin I just pull them off the bed and they go straight to the washer.
I wash the babes clothes and CD whenever. Everything else I just pull out one big stack and it's about 4 loads. I do this 2x a week or so.

I don't sort by color at all. DH handles his own laundry. I mix mine and LO's together, and separate by weight (jeans, sweats, pajamas, etc. are together, and sweaters, tees, & lingerie are together). All household linens get washed together, and presently I do loads of diapers as well.

I have a laundry schedule...
Tuesday - baby / kid clothes
Wednesday - big people clothes
Thursday - sheets and any towels
Friday - baby / kid clothes
Saturday - big people clothes, then towels
Most of our clothing is all stuff that can go in a standard wash but I do wash any merino or woollens separately with a wool detergent, and I use a laundry / lingerie bag for bras and other delicates.

I sort by water temp.
Things like towels and whites- get washed in hot. Usually together.
daughter's clothes - all washed cold, gentle. Usually together unless something may bleed (rare)
Our clothes - all washed cold. I do separate jeans from others.
Linens / sheets are washed separately.

Whites/lights (we have a lot of grey and pastel clothes)
Darks
Bright colors
Baby clothes all go in together in one load
Towels/sheets
Dog towels/blankets separately
And I don't do it all on the same day!

-Baby clothes (wash and dry)
-Grown up clothing that goes in the drier
-Grown up clothing that we hang up (DH button up shirts, jeans and things I dont want to dry, I should sort out the jeans but I dont want to wash a small load)
-Sheets and towels
-Kitchen towels and the clip on baby chair cover
Our clothing is mostly dark so splitting things like this works out for colors too.

@fussygal: it's the only way I can stay on top of the washing! And turns out that I'm just a schedule person...

All our clothes get washed together. We don't own enough whites or lights to do separate loads really. Baby clothes are so tiny that they just get mixed in with everything. If she had more sensitive skin I would separate and wash them in different detergent.

I don't separate whites. I just wash all my clothes together. I wash all DD's together too. I am very particular about drying clothes on a rack though so the only things I put in the dryer are socks, underwear, bedding and towels. DH does his own laundry and he doesn't separate anything either.
