We're living with ours for a month until we close on our house. ... I'd say that's about the longest I could go.

Um. An hour?
I truly could never live with them! Their house is so permeated with smoke that the one time I spent the night I spent half the night coughing! Nope nope!

A week, but I would be so miserable and feel so awkward the whole time.

It would be really hard for me for us to spend one night with my MIL. She spent our last lunch telling everyone that I need to quit working, change my diet and have a glass of wine every day so that I don't develop pre-e again. Argh.

I actually did for the first year out of college - they weren't actually my in-laws yet at the time, we weren't even engaged yet. However, like @Bookish, the house was permeated with smoke, and even now, 8 years later, I'm horrified at the fact that I went to work IN AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL every day smelling like smoke! I had no idea since the smoke affected my sense of smell so much.
But the actual living situation wasn't that bad. We were actually more like roommates who handled our own meals, and just shared the rooms of the house...
That said, I wouldn't do it again...not even to save that year's worth of rent.

I lived with my in-laws for 4 months, and it was really hard. I would NOT do it again.

Umm, probably a few months. We lived with my parents for 6 months, so I could probably do that long, MAX with J's mom.

Well... I've stayed with them for a week and that was enough
I was grateful they opened their home while we were on vacation though. (they live in another state)
I could live with my parents much longer.

We lived with my in-laws for 6 months when our oldest was a baby, and it was fine. Not ideal, but we weren't in a place to be able to live on our own financially. Now, 8 years later, a week of vacation in the same house with them turns me into a total bitch.

@MrsStar: yeah I loved my MIL until we lived with her. We never fought bit she is incredibly nosy & asks a million questions. Now I just tolerate her because I have to.

We moved in with my stepdad after my parents split to save up for a house. We're coming on two years, and closing on our first house next month (if all goes well! Fingers crossed!) Living here has been both a blessing and a curse, but financially made sense. We don't have children yet, so I'm sure that would make it more stressful. I wouldn't mind living with my MIL... she's awesome and an amazing cook!

My FIL lives with us (in our home) so quite a long time! With my MIL/SFIL? Maybe a couple of highly awkward and uncomfortable days.

Less than a week.... Vacations at their house is hard enough to bear.

We lived with them for about 6 months 4 years ago. Never again, it was terrible.

I lived with my in-laws for two whole years, and I was soooo miserable. Never again. I won't even stay the night, even though it's more convenient when we have to visit two days in a row.

A week. We stay in a rental house that long for vacation and by day five everyone starts getting on each other's nerves.

Eek! I don't think I could. Even an overnight...no issues like smoking or anything, just conflicting personalities and I would totally not be comfortable sleeping over in their home.

My MIL comes to visit for a week once a year and I think that is a good amount!

I get stressed on day one of a weekend-long visit. You are a saint for surviving a month...

Maybe a week or two but I would be hiding in my bedroom!

We lived with them for 9 months 2 years ago. The first 3 months were ok and it went downhill after that.

I've learned through vacationing I couldn't do it. If something really bad happened, maybe a week? If I had a job so I was out of the house more it would probably be slightly less tolerable, but I couldn't imagine trying to do the SAHM thing not in my own space.

It's been going on 3.5 years now... and counting... so I guess longer than this.
They're gone this whole month, and as much as I love them, it feels really nice to have our own space back!

We stayed with my inlaws for about two weeks when the closing of our house got delayed but we had a tenant moving into our condo. It was fine bc I was working at the time with a long commute so it was really only a short time in the evening that we would see them and we just did our own things on the weekend. But now I'm a SAHM so I'm not sure how long I could live with them...I think two weeks would be my limit

We've done it before for over a year. They smoke, and despite their best efforts to only smoke outside, they don't follow that rule and their house smells too strongly. I don't even like the dogs going over there because they come home smelling smoky. I definitely don't want my kids in there. D was with us when we stayed with him and he had the worst allergy problems that year.
