I've only had one at 6 weeks (transvaginally)...
My next appt is at 16 weeks and my dr said last time that I won't be getting one until my 19/20 wk anatomy scan.
Should I ask for one at 16 weeks? Will I still get the one at 20 wks?

I got one at 8 weeks (dating ultrasound), getting one tomorrow at 13 weeks (first trimester screening), and the anatomy scan at 20 weeks. I don't expect to get anymore, unless there are any issues/complications. So, three.
cantaloupe / 6687 posts
I had 2 early on bc the first one was super early (I think 6 weeks and 8 weeks)
Then I had one at 16 weeks (NT screening) and another at 20 weeks (anatomy and gender)
pomegranate / 3729 posts
I had 4 but should have only had 2. First was around 10 weeks for a dating ultrasound. Then one at 18 weeks for anatomy scan and gender, but our LO was always stubborn for the machine so they didn't get everything they needed so I had to go back at 20 weeks. Then had one at 41w3d to check fluid levels and see if induction could wait until 42 weeks or not.

Five so far. Two transvaginally, one at 5 weeks 4 days, and the other at 7 weeks. At 13 weeks there was the NT scan, and at 19 we had the anatomy scan. Around 22 weeks I had to go for a fetal echocardiogram, and that was just a high resolution US of the heart only.
I'd kinda like another to just check in, but no more would also mean no complications at this point. So hopefully 5 is the max!

I've already had four! But that's really unusual. I had one at 8 weeks for dating and vitality, one at 10 weeks because of cramping, one at 11 weeks because of spotting, and then my NT scan at 12 weeks! Hopefully I shouldn't have to have another until the anatomy scan at 20 weeks. I also found out that I have a low lying placenta. My doctor is hopeful it will resolve itself by 20 weeks but if not, they'll do a follow up ultra sound at 28 weeks to see what it looks like.

First pregnancy I had 4 (transvag @ 8 weeks=dating/vitality, 20 weeks=anatomy, 28 weeks=biophysical profile because I wasn't feeling much movement, 36 weeks=size estimate). So far this pregnancy, I've had two (transvag @ 7 weeks=dating/vitality, 19 weeks=anatomy). I expect to have only 1 more around 36 weeks for size estimate.

I had three. First at 6 weeks (dating), 12 weeks (NT scan), and 20 weeks (gender).
hostess / watermelon / 14932 posts
I had my dating U/S at about 10 weeks, and the elective NT scan at 12 weeks. My anatomy scan was at 18 weeks.
I also paid for an early gender determination (2D), and I'm participating in a study so I'll have another one through the hospital sometime in the 3rd tri.

Will have at least 3 this time around'

2....20 weeks (gender scan) and 33 weeks (because I had a kidney stone)....could have had an early one for NT scan but opted out
I'm in Canada

I have had 3, but normally my office only does 1 unless they suspect issues. My first one was because they thought I might be further along than they orginially guessed, so they wanted to know for sure. (9 weeks) I was in a car accident at 18 weeks so the hosptial did one to make sure baby was okay. And then I had my A/S at 20 weeks. I don't suspect I'll be getting another one unless something comes up.

for my first I believe I had a total of 13- it was one thing after another.
I am hoping that this time around we have no more than 3.

Lemme see . . .6 so far: (1) at 8 weeks to confirm heartbeat; (2) at 12 weeks for the NT scan; (3) at 16 weeks--but this was an elective u/s-- to determine sex; (4) at 16.5 weeks for an amnio (I planned the elective scan before I was scheduled for an amnio, so I just kept the elective appointment - more pictures!); (5) at 20 weeks for anatomy scan; and (6) at 22 weeks during pre-term contractions.
After my 20 week anatomy scan, my OB told me that they would not plan any additional u/s. I plan to do another elective u/s between 26- 30 weeks (I am 25 weeks this week).

For us it depends on if you want certain testing. If you don't want any you just get a 20 week. If you do want testing it you also get a 12 week.
The only others are if something is wrong. I had a lot in the beginning for some bleeding, and one in the end because lo measured big.
pomegranate / 3980 posts
I got one at 10 weeks (it was a dating one), then my anatomy scan at 22 weeks, and then an unplanned one at 34 weeks just to confirm her being breech.
squash / 13764 posts
I have one at every Ob appt..so 8 weeks, 12 weeks, this week at 18 weeks, and then whenever else I see her. I also had higher level/better quality ultrasounds at 12 weeks (for NT scan), at 16 weeks (for part I of anatomy scan), and will have another at 20 weeks (for part 2 of anatomy scan). I love seeing the baby so I'm definitely not complaining!
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
4 - one transvaginally, one to check all the organs (at 18 weeks), one 3d/4d at 26 weeks for fun (we paid for it) and one at 32 (or something like that) weeks because I wasn't measuring properly.
pomelo / 5321 posts
I had 6 total but 2 was the norm for our midwife & hospital. The first was at 12 weeks (transvaginally). I had an anatomy scan at 18 weeks and then went back for a second scan at 20 weeks because the tech couldn't get all of the scans at the first one. I had another around 25 weeks or so to check on baby because of a fall. I also had 2 elective 3D ultrasounds.
I don't think they will do an extra ultrasound just because you ask for it. Most providers will only do so if there is cause for concern.

So far we've had 4--a transvaginal one at 8 weeks, one at 12 weeks because the doc had a hard time finding the heart beat (everything was ok), NT scan at 13 weeks, and anatomy scan at 20 weeks. We're doing an elective 4D scan at 28 weeks, and the doc asked us to go for an u/s to check the kidneys at 32 weeks (they were measuring on the higher side of normal). Unless something else comes up, we'll have 6 total including the elective 4D.

I had ultrasaounds at
7 weeks
11 weeks (NT scan)
19 weeks (anatomy scan)
22 weeks (anatomy scan)
38 weeks (size)
40 weeks
GOLD / wonderful pea / 17697 posts
We've had 3--the first at 8 weeks for dating/viability (had I not had a previous miscarriage I don't think I would have gotten this one), the NT scan at 12 weeks, and the anatomy at 20. I don't anticipate another one unless there's a suspected problem.
pineapple / 12234 posts
I've had 4...first was 8 weeks for dating, second anatomy scan at 19 weeks, then 32 weeks for sizing and we didn't see the four chambers of the heart during the anatomy scan, 38 weeks for sizing/because my blood pressure is elevated.
coconut / 8681 posts
Oh gosh let’s see… I had one at 5w3d due to prior MCs, one at 7w3d for heartbeat, one at 10 weeks just because my doctor doesn’t underestimate my nerves, NT scan at 12 weeks, U/S at regular OB appt at 14 weeks, U/S at regular OB appt last week at 18 weeks and I have my actual anatomy scan with the perinatologist today. So this will be #7. I definitely wouldn’t have had a few of them if I hadn’t had MC issues in the past but I do think that my OB is pretty liberal about them. He has a machine in office and doesn’t mind just “taking a peek.”
GOLD / papaya / 10166 posts
From the doctor, 3. But my sister is an ultrasound tech so I got close to 10 of them.
persimmon / 1194 posts
My Dr. has one in office so she does an ultrasound at every visit to confirm position and heartbeat but here are the major ones we had: 8 weeks (dating), 12 weeks (NT Scan), 17 weeks (anatomy scan), 28 weeks (3rd tri scan), 36 weeks (growth scan). It really depends on your Dr and your insurance as most insurance will only cover 2-3 ultrasounds a pregnancy (dating ultrasound, anatomy scan, 3rd trimester scan).
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
3 scheduled: dating ultrasound at 7 weeks I think??, NT scan at 13 then anatomy scan at 18.
I requested a "fun" ultrasound at 30 weeks bc we didn't want to go half a pregnancy w/o seeing her!
eggplant / 11287 posts
I had 12!!!!!
I went to a high risk perinatologist so I got ultrasounds almost every appointment.
cantaloupe / 6610 posts
I had a subchorionic hemorrhage so I got a few extras, and I also had a couple of unexplained spotting episodes that landed me in the ER...I'm 11w4d and I've had 7 ultrasounds already, but I think if I hadn't had any issues, my OB's office would have only done 1 by now.
This Friday is my NT scan and that will be my 8th at 12weeks. Yeah, that's ridiculous. I know:)
cherry / 220 posts
My doctor does a quick one at all the appointments (and I'm not high risk or anything). I love being able to see baby so often!
grapefruit / 4819 posts
Only three unless something comes up - and that's more than they usually give. I had one at 6 weeks for dating as I have long, irregular cycles, then we opted for the 12 week NT scan (completely optional - would not have been offered a scan if we chose not to do the testing), and then the 20 weeks anomaly scan.
I'm currently 36 weeks and don't anticipate having any more unless something goes wrong.
pomegranate / 3053 posts
If your pregnancy isn't high risk then you normally only get three. One between 6 - 8 weeks, one between 11-12 weeks and then another around 19 or 20 weeks.
pear / 1616 posts
My dr's office does the dating us at 8 weeks, nt scan at 12 weeks (if you decide to do it), and anatomy scan at 20 weeks. I've had two extra early on tho because of bleeding at 5 and 7 weeks
grape / 78 posts
I had 4.
- 11 weeks (this was the first time I could get in since I had just moved to a new city)
- 13 weeks (moved from an OB/GYN practice to a midwife practice so I got another one :))
- 16 weeks (they thought they saw a hernia in the umbilical cord so this one was to check it...no hernia! They also just treated this one like an anatomy scan since we were in there)
- 20 weeks (regular anatomy scan)
We could have found out the sex at 16 weeks and 20 weeks, but we were Team Green so we looked away.
GOLD / squash / 13576 posts
I believe 2 to 3 is normal.
1. Confirm pregnancy
2. Prenatal Testing
3. Anatomy Screen
I've had a lot more because I had some odd blood work results and also because our LO is in the 89th percentile for height and weight.
pomelo / 5720 posts
I have had 3 so far and there are no plans to have anymore. NT scan, anatomy scan, and then one last week to make sure my placenta was no longer in the way. I would have only had two if not for the placenta issue.
grapefruit / 4120 posts
Last pregnancy I had four: 8 weeks, 20 weeks, 32 weeks and one after that/before delivery (obviously!) I'm following that same pattern so far with this baby. The middle two were done by a specialist and the first and last at my normal OB's office.
I am no expert but I believe you should wait for the 20 week one. That is when they can really see a lot of things well. 16 weeks may not be a good use of time/money.
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
I've had a lot this time around! I've gone in to see the OBGYN because of pain and they sent me for an ultrasound every time. Sometimes to check my cervix and sometimes to check for kidney stones. I'll also be sent for a few more very late (around 36 weeks, I think?) to check the baby's growth and determine if/when we should induce or schedule a c-section due to my gestational diabetes.
