my doctor doesn't require a list, but I'm making one just because I really don't know how many she has! I know they're going to ask next week.
how many did your LO have at 15 months?

Ellie had two: Mama, and "up." Only mama was reliable. She now speaks wonderfully and has an excellent vocabulary.
Lorelei was already using short sentences and had well over 200 words. I have no idea how many she actually had because it was too many to make a list.
So much variation at that age! Would you share your list? It's always fun to see what words kids are motivated (and able) to learn first.

We have mama, dada, at(cat), moo and baa. That's about the only words I can count on for DS at 15.5 months.
grapefruit / 4817 posts
Probably under 5 words that were actual words and not just parroting.
GOLD / wonderful olive / 19030 posts
15 months tomorrow and our list is around 30 plus a couple phrases like "stop it" "all done" "come on" & "let's go."
She repeats everything too clear as day, but doesn't necessarily know what they mean so I don't include those. She also knows several people's names.

G just had a language explosion at 16 months. Probably 10 words and growing each day. He has also started connecting 2-3 signs together, like "more milk please."
coconut / 8681 posts
14 i think? Mama, Dada, hi, up, out, dog, uh oh, milk, baby, truck, dump truck, tree, choo choo and outside. He will say almost anything when prompted but those are the ones he initiates regularly.
He also makes quite a few noises....vroom, the noises for lion, elephant, monkey and dog, beep beep...
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
Not many...maybe 5. She got more words right before her 18 month appt (about 15).
nectarine / 2994 posts
3- mama, dada and sometimes uh-oh. She also says baba - which means baby.
squash / 13764 posts
He is 14.5 months and has 11 I think?
Mama
Dada
Up
All done
Cheese
Door
Ball
Button
Belly button
Bubbles (lots of b sounds!)
dis (this)
He also makes sounds for cow, dog, and a siren (I think sounds count as words at that age also!).
hostess / wonderful watermelon / 39513 posts
Maybe 10? No, mama, daddy, cheese, bubbles, doggy, book, uppy and a few more!
honeydew / 7444 posts
At 18 months she had 13 (some in different languages).
At 13 months she had 5, so at 15 months it was something in between that.
hostess / watermelon / 14932 posts
so do you only count words they say without any type of prompting?
hostess / watermelon / 14932 posts
@Mrs. Twine:
if words with zero prompting, she has 12 I think -
mama
dada
nana (she does not say this often, but can)
papa
light
wow
uh-oh
more
owl
doggy (she says something like..foreign sounding..but consistent)
night night
uppy (no idea what this means yet, though)
edit: duh, forgot "hi" and "up"
squash / 13764 posts
@sorrycharlie: yup I only count words that he says spontaneously on his own (although they might be in response to a question). I don't count things he just repeats when we say them.
hostess / watermelon / 14932 posts
@hilsy85: oh! so if I say, what does the lion say? and she says, roar. or meow for cat. would those count..or are those technically a sound? LOL. hopefully my dr doesn't care enough to ask for a count
squash / 13764 posts
@sorrycharlie: I think animal sounds count as words! I would count those!
blogger / nectarine / 2608 posts
@sorrycharlie: That's a good list! You can count animal sounds at that age. And I don't think they care about the list so much, only insofar as it tells them if there is a concern. And with your list I would be surprised if there were any.
GOLD / papaya / 10166 posts
I think she had about 5 (can't remember them, though), none of which were momma or dada.
grapefruit / 4997 posts
@sorrycharlie: yes those count because she expressing her thought process. Her amazing dance moves should also count as 10 words per beat!
hostess / watermelon / 14932 posts
@Kimberlybee: lol! gonna have to get her into dance class as soon as she turns 2!

At 14.5 months J has:
dada
hi/hiya
mama
no
yeah
duck ("duh")
woof ("wuh wuh")
moo ("muh")
baa
neigh ("na na")
book ("buh")
done ("duh")
bye (sounds more like "bah")

DS only has about 3-4 at 15 months. At his check up, they asked if he had at least two words.
pomelo / 5093 posts
In the hundreds, with two word sentences. Mine was an early talker, late walker.
hostess / watermelon / 14932 posts
@sarac: mine's a late walker, too! haha I guess she does everything at her own pace
nectarine / 2280 posts
She'll be 15 months next week and has over one hundred. She's starting two word sentences now. She has an amazing memory. When I read books I pause and she fills in the missing word. She's really good at Where the Wild Things are.
@Mrs. Twine: I think she's like you Lorelei
Do doctors really ask for a list?
coconut / 8430 posts
OMG! I am floored by how many words some of your LOs can say. C has a much shorter list
Mama
Dada
Nana (milk)
Bubble
Ball
Hi
Uh oh
After 15 months she's added:
Kitty (as in Hello Kitty)
Cat
Please
Cheese
She understands a lot more but I haven't heard her say the words.
persimmon / 1147 posts
DD is 16 months and can say- Da Da, Ma Ma, cat, Bop (her name for the cat), quack, moo, fish, no, yes, up, ho ho ho (when asked what Santa says), cheese, and purp (purple or purple ball)- so 13?
hostess / watermelon / 14932 posts
@katsupgirl: I think they just ask for a rough number
@autumn865: yes, I love the "ho ho hoooo!" I'm glad I started this thread because it's helping to jog my memory lol
grapefruit / 4823 posts
He only had like 5-7 words at 15 months. At 20 months, he's starting to pick up words easier and quicker, at least one a day it seems
blogger / nectarine / 2608 posts
@katsupgirl: You're in for a fun time! They say such funny stuff.

I remember the doctor asking and I counted about a dozen. I didn't include animal sounds, though!
hostess / wonderful honeydew / 32460 posts
I just looked back and she had 23! most were korean words.
admin / watermelon / 14210 posts
There is such a huge range at that age. I have many friends with kids who had no words at 18 months that were just late talkers.
I looked back and Charlie only had 7-8 words at 15 months. By 21 months he had 200 words and just grew exponentially from there. It really happens like overnight!
Olive had more than 7-8 words at 15 months but she wasn't using them consistently, and actually had a bit of a regression where she stopped using words she formerly did. She really has had a huge language explosion in the past month (26 months). Way behind Charlie, but not too delayed.
Every child is so different when it comes to speech!
cantaloupe / 6751 posts
At 18 months (when I really started keeping track), she had 17 words. I think around 15 months she probably had about 5? Not very many.
She's definitely a late talker! 22 months now And has about 55 words. I'm so jealous of all you mamas with chatty kiddos!
