Less than $500. We bought the crib for $175, mattress for $115, a couple $10 sheets, a used changing table ($10), DH made a bookcase for $50. Toybox was $15, hamper was $20, I DIYed all the art so I purchased frames from a thrift store for less than $10 total and made/printed/drew the art myself.
The crib was definitely most expensive.
Oh, I should note we bought an upholstered chair but it's not in the nursery. It's in the living room, so I didn't count that. It was $400.

We've spent about $1500 total and I love her nursery. I would have done more "upcycling" of older furniture if I could have but our area is really crappy for used furniture.

Originally, we just bought the crib/mattress (well, were gifted them) and added a changing pad on top of a dresser because baby was sharing our room. We moved when she was 9 months and set up a room for her for about $600. The biggest splurge was a big wool rug from Land of Nod for $400. We bought an LoN dresser for $100 on craigslist and an Ikea Expedit for toys. I had a rocking chair from my own childhood that's in there too. The art is mostly pieces we had already, though we did have a couple of pieces reframed to better suit the space.

Well under $500. Crib mattress, sheets were all gifted. Re-purposed other furniture. Left the curtains up that were already in the room. Gifted some art work (DIY by DH's cousin). I DIY'd some simple things (a mobile and his first initial) and we painted one wall. That's it!

I think we spent around $300. We were gifted a crib and beyond that didn't get much for the nursery aside from curtains, crib sheets and a change pad to put on a dresser we already owned. We just reused furniture from elsewhere in the house. I didn't want to spend a ton of money before potentially doing an international move.
Once we're settled somewhere I plan on spending some money on A's big girl room, which I'm happier to invest a bit more in anyway as she'll be old enough to enjoy it all.

Not much, since the expensive pieces were gifted. I would say under $500, but well over $1000 if you include what was gifted to us.

My parents bought him his crib which was probably $700 (Pali)
Dresser (real wood, can be used forever) - $800 (Pali)
Glider - $600 (Jordan's furniture, real furniture not a nursery glider) can be used in office someday)
Bedding - mattress was a gift from grandma, 2 quilts gifted to us, 3 sheets for probably $30 (Target), dust ruffle (PBK kid sale - $20)
Rug - $100 (Sale, PBK)
Curtains - $60 (Sale, PBK)
Decorations - splurge. custom framed his baby shower invite and family tree - $300
Trash can, door hooks, hamper, diaper tote - $50 (Target)
All estimates off the top of my head. In total, around $2,000 personally.

@LindsayInNY: Maybe they thought it was $1000? Or they're Mariah Carey!
I would say we were about $1600 (cost) including paint and painting. But we used gifts and GC, so our total was closer to $1300. I don't think we did too bad because I Craigslisted and DIY'd a lot of stuff myself.

I just wrote this all out for @locavore_mama: 's other thread, so I'll repost it here. We spent right around $500, maybe a little more.
We bought:
$70 IKEA crib
$80 Sealy mattress
$40 mattress pad
$60 two sheets (one nice Giggle one, one cheap Target one)
$20 new throw blanket for when I'm nursing from IKEA
$20 IKEA rug
$20 IKEA wall storage
$30 wall art cannibalized from a Rifle Paper Co. calendar
$10 wall art from IKEA
$50 hanging globe from PBK (this was our splurge)
$90 frames for the art and mobile supplies from Michael's
$10 bins to organize cloth diapers on clearance at Target
Some things came from other places in our house:
One lamp for the side table
Wire rack for diapering supplies (used to hold detergent)
DH's grandma's glider
Side table from my aunt
The rest were hand-me-downs:
Dresser from a cousin's nursery
Lamp from my parents
Curtains from my sister's college apartment

dude, so someone's kid is sleeping in a nursery that cost more than my car? holy cow!!
Crib was a gift, but was around $300?
I got her dresser for $50.
Mattress for $90.
Glider was the splurge at $400.
Organizer thing was $30.

I didn't keep track but probably around $3k, that was largely due to the fact though that DH insisted on a crib that was a little over $1000. We also had to buy a dresser, a glider and we went for the organic crib mattress. Oh, and we used BM no VOC paint so that was a couple hundred dollars. Once you add in the art/accessories/curtain fabric/blackout shade etc., it probably all adds up to around $3,000.

@littlek: in an ideal world (i.e., one where I have no budget ) there are a few things I would have done differently (definitely a new glider, probably different dresser, maybe a different crib), and then I probably could have spent $2000 or so. But it wasn't in the budget, alas.
We would have spent a bit more had we needed to buy the lamp, dresser, and curtains, but as it happened, my aunt, mom, and sister were all trying to get rid of perfectly nice pieces at the time when we needed them. So, we were able to do it for less. Actually, had we had to buy those pieces, we probably wouldn't have spent as much on the decor side, so it still likely would have been $500 or so.

We're still working on ours but so far we have:
Crib ($400 gifted)
Crib mattress ($110 gifted)
Glider ($450 gifted)
Mattress Pad ($35 gifted)
Crib sheet ($18 gifted)
Sound machine (borrowed)
Paint ($50 bought with gift cards to Home Depot)
Are getting an Ikea dresser gifted ($300)
Need to replace blinds -- estimating $100
Decor -- estimating about $200
Some things we'll register for -- changing pad, nightlight, etc.
I'm estimating it will come in a little less than $2,000 total, a majority of which was gifted. So hoping like $300-$500 out of pocket.

We were so so blessed & gifted a lot....I think we spent $200/250. It's also a very very small room so that helped me keep my spending in check. My grandmother & the family I was nannying for at the time provided about 70% of what we needed. I'm so grateful!
cantaloupe / 6131 posts
I picked a $200 crib that will convert to a toddler bed and a $80 mattress. With sheets and mattress pad, I think we'll be at about $350. I'm almost certain my mother will want to get this for us.
We are reusing a long dresser and have a humidifier, so we'll just need a changing pad and a trash can. We're just putting the baby in a corner of our master, so I don't think we'll need much more. We have an existing recliner that swivels and rocks, so that will be fine. So I put under $500 total. I may end up getting a cute rug to designate the baby's corner, but I don't expect to spend much on it.
cantaloupe / 6751 posts
Adding everything up, I would say everything cost about $2,000 but we received many gifts so total out of pocket for us was around $1,000.

We probably spent just under $1000, we bought a second hand Oeuf crib, a mattress, a small rocker, dresser, some wall art and sheets.

I'm just trying to determine our budget for our nursery. I'm thinking $1000 should cover it, including furniture and art and everything. I won't be painting or changing the light fixture. I'm planning on getting furniture from Ikea.
squash / 13208 posts
Furniture was $1200 - that included a convertible crib with railings, mattress, dresser, night stand. This will be their furniture until they move out of the house - so well worth the $$!
Bedding/ Curtains - $300
So $1500
eggplant / 11408 posts
@pui: if we were buying everything new, we would have gone the IKEA route as well, and I think $1000 would have covered it. Had we had the extra wiggle room, I think I would have used the $ we didn't spend on furniture and art to get a slightly better mattress. As it was, I like our mattress, but I was also looking at some slightly better organic ones. I ultimately decided that the extra $100 could go to a better use, but if we had had the money, I would have upgraded there.

Maybe a thousand? Crib and furniture was about $300 total from Ikea, curtains were $100, I had painted the room 5 years ago in a color I liked.....artwork, fabric boxes, and decor was probably another $400. Dresser was $60, but I bought that 5 years ago at an antique store!

With furniture, bedding, and accessories - I think around $3,000? I didn't keep track. But, little brother is using the exact same nursery except for getting a new shelf with his name and some name blocks totaling $100. Big brother never really used his nursery. Plus, the furniture they can use when they share a room.

~$650 and that includes the crib and dresser the ILs gifted us. We also bought a glider and ottoman from Walmart which was ~$100. A rug for about $50. We just used a diaper changing pad. And a vertical bookcase from Ikea. ETA: Crib mattress is from SIL's sister. She had no decorations up in her room till after her first birthday and then they were repurposed DIY from her party.
The crib and glider are being reused for #2. ILs are gifting us a dresser for new baby. And our BFFs gave us his childhood solid wood twin frame which we are refinishing for LO #1's big girl bed.

Did 2 people really spend $10K? Or did they just vote that to mess with us!

This one is hard for me to answer because our "nursery" is also our guest room. Our crib was a gift (0$),we bought an ikea dresser ($200), a changing pad and cover (no clue--$40?), and a few crib sheets ($40). So.....less than $300 for stuff that is actually in our nursery.
BUT. I posted on here several times before about our glider chair debacle. We spent a fair amount on a glider chair I really wanted that I thought would also look good in our living room in the future (it doesn't look like baby nursery furniture at all). And because of a ridiculous series of events from the baby store we purchased it, we didn't even get it until LO was 5 months old and it went right into the living room.
So....if I don't count the chair, $300. If I do count that stupid chair, we're in the $1000-$2000 category. Stupid glider.
Oh wait--edit. Since we waited so long to get our chair, we got it for free. SO...jk. our nursery total is still $300. And mental anguish for having to call a baby store 1000 times in a 6 month period.
cantaloupe / 6885 posts
Crib -$150
Mattress - $50
Paint - $50
Fabric for curtains/pillows/crib skirt - $100
Dresser - free
Rocker - free
Keekaroo peanut changing pad - $80
Pictures - gift
Book wall shelves - $200
Ikea Expedit - $75
Bins - $20
Lamp - gifted
Total: $725

When we announced we were KU, my MIL brought over the RH baby catalouge and had a whole nursery picked out that she thought was just "perfect." It was a safari theme and so extremely over the top... DH and I had a good laugh and then started adding up everything in the photo... it was well over $20,000. Seriously, people???

I keep refreshing in the hopes that there are pictures of these fancy babies' quarters!

I think just the furniture was more than $500.
Two cribs at $130 each,
two mattresses at $100 each.
One dresser was $200
One shelf was $250
A storage cube shelf was $40.
Oops, just did the math and that's nearly $1,000.
We also bought a recliner for the family room in lieu of a rocker or glider. I needed a chair that I could rock two babies in! That was roughly $400 (It was BOGO for two, we sold the second one on Craigslist for $300).
That doesn't include paint for the walls or bedding, maybe another $100?
BUT if you divide that into two, it's around $750 per baby, so that's okay, right? Haha!
