How much do you spend on a birthday gift for a child's classmate. I don't know the family, and we are on a tight budget.

I buy in bulk when toys go on clearance at Target/Walmart and store for these situations, so it usually breaks down to about $10. But the toys range in price from $20-30 bucks though.
I just stocked up on Barbie items, puzzles, and Lego sets and each item was less than $7... I think I got a total of 15 of them to set me into the next year. I figured no one knows the $$$ amount I spent (I'm cheap!)

Yea I would be fine doing $15 or even a gift worth $15-$20 but found on sale/clearance for $10-15?

Honestly some of the best bday gifts we just got this year were games, play dough, chalk, bubbles, twistable crayons/pencils, coloring books, art supplies, nerf balls, etc. Not even toys!

@oskarsmommy: We have a lot of birthday parties to attend these days, so last year, I started keeping a shelf in my closet reserved for gifts and when something cool is on sale, I buy multiples. I also have no shame and if one of my LOs receives really similar gifts (like two similar play sets or two similar games), I just keep one in the packaging and regift later at another birthday party in a different friend group. I only need so many vocabulary building board games, you know? But if it's a regift, I couple it with something else small, like new playdough or new sidewalk chalk.
I also buy packs of birthday cards and gift bags/paper when they are on sale (Michael's has sales or coupons all the time and I stock up). I keep it all on the same shelf in the closet. I use to find myself spending $20-30 on a gift, and then another $7-10 on a card and wrapping stuff. now I probably spend $20 total, including the wrapping.

With so many parties, we spend about $10-$15 for friends that my son isn't close with and $20-$25 for his closer friends. Most of the toys that my son has received from his own birthday are quickly put in a bin and forgotten about so I have a hard time spending a lot. One of the favorite gifts he received was when someone went to the Five Below store (where everything is $5 or less) and got him a bunch of superhero stuff (water bottle, lunch box, board game, and toy).

$10-$15, but I really try to buy things on clearance and hide them in a closet. Like, right now Kohl's has a 30% coupon code for cardholders and a free shipping code, and I wait for those types of sales and look at the toys that are already on clearance/sale and snap them up for a much cheaper deal. I also keep a mental list of small toys my boys have LOVED and if I'm in a pinch, I know to grab those toys over and over again at Target, knowing they wont go over $15 dollars.
Cards - Dollar Tree, always.

I usually spend $15 - $20, but I have upped it to $20 - $25 now that LO is in elementary school. Noticed that most parents spent $15 or less (sometimes $5) on birthday presents when LO was in preschool. Now parents are really generous, and LO received so many $20 -$30 gifts and gift cards at his last birthday party.

I had been spending $30 and apparently that was the high end.

I buy a bunch of books at the beginning of the year and gift them for kids we don't see much or know well. I spend about $10. For close friends/family sometimes up to $50.

For a classmate I would do $10. The dollar section of Target is my go to cheap present destination. Seriously, $10 worth of junk is always a hit for kids

All of my son's friends were born within 3 months of each other so we're going to at least one party a weekend for a long stretch. I've been buying a $10 gift for those that my son isn't close with and maybe $15-$20 for those that we are. Right now for 5 yo, I've been buying science kits, these make your own pillow things, and legos. I tend to buy in bulk and pull when I need it.

Up to 20 for a classmate, more for a close friend. We also stock up on toys when we see them on sale. My husband bought 6-7 boxes of discounted Legos earlier this year and we have been gifting them at birthday parties.

$10-15. DS and his friends will turn 3 this year, and we buy his favorite book for everyone. I just ordered a dozen copies on Amazon so that I'm not running to the store at the last minute each weekend, and everyone will get it throughout the year.
