Your insurance is much better than mine. I would consider that a pretty great policy... especially for the cost!

Our total cost is $890, with me covering $545 per month.
We have a $2,200 individual deductible, $4,400 family.
ER trips are $350, co-pays are $40, specialists are $60.

Just for me and DD it is $1000 a month, but my work covers $200 of it. Still CRAZY expensive, and I have a $6k deductible (I think for the family) and $18k max out of pocket.
Getting insurance through DH's job was not a better option, we are screwed either way.

I have coverage as a state government employee so its really cheap. I pay like $250 a month for all of us, including dental and vision. We pay $5-10 for prescriptions, $15 office visits, $10 for labs, $50 for ER visits, and $0 for hospital stays.

Once I'm off on unpaid leave, we'll switch to DH's employer coverage with the same HMO but it will cost us $600 a month with dental and vision! We'll pay $15 for prescriptions, $20 for doctor visits, $50 for ER, and $250 for hospital stays.

We are insured through DH's employer, and it is just about $400/month for the three of us. This covers health, dental and vision. It's pretty solid insurance - no deductible, reasonable out of pocket max, and low co-pays. We're happy to pay what we do, especially when compared to what we used to have, which was essentially catastrophic insurance for $700/month. DH went from a local company of 50 to one of 500, so this factors into play.

I pay $450/mth for coverage for a family of 4 (unsure how much my employer covers). No deductible, all well visits/shots (kids) and physicals (parents) covered, $25 copay for sick visits, $40 copay for specialists. At a participating hospital, all stays + er 100% covered. We get dental and vision through DH's work, unsure of how much we pay.

I'm a teacher and our insurance is 100% covered (although lower pay for area). They say it's equal to like $15k a year for every single person, family or no. That seems crazy to me...but whatever.

We pay $10 copays for visits, $50 for ER and that's it.

@Bao: Oh, I understand. It's a big chunk for my DH as well. And when the increase in insurance is 5% but your annual pay increase is only 2%.... boo.

I am lucky. I pay $75/month for DH & I (my employer covers $875/month). This includes the $40/month discount for participating in the employee wellness program. It is also really good coverage...too lazy to look up the details but if I recall correctly pretty much everything is covered at 100 or close to 100%. No deductible, low OOP max.

Ours is 850 a month and we have to meet a 2500 deductible. It's absolutely insane.

About $800 a month. Visits are $80, routine labs about $200, and OOP max $7k each. It's ridiculous!

For two 30 yr old adults and one toddler my work pays $900/m for medical and another $175/m for dental (I know this because I am quasi-HR). We were able to take the $900 they pay and enroll into either an HMO or a HDHP PPO with a $7K deductible and $13K OOP maximum. We went with the HMO. My work covers 100% of the premium cost, and we feel so so fortunate.

@Mrs Green Grass: That is crazy , they must be averaging you with the older people... The older people are literally like 3X the cost of a 20/30 yr old.

We have a high deductible plan.

$3000 deductible for their 'preferred providers' covered at 80% and copays after its met

$6000 deductible for their 'non-preferred providers' covered at 60% and copy's after its met

We get $2000 in our HSA through my employer. We have no premiums...one of the perks of working at the insurance company I guess.

My family of 4 is all on my insurance. I'm a teacher and our state has really good state insurance for teachers. We pay about $450 a month, but all well visits are free, sick visits are $10, both of my births were $10. I don't even know what our deductible is, but our OOP max for the year is low, like $3000 for the whole family so I think that's great. We've never come close to that, since maternity is covered 100%, but it's nice to know we won't go bankrupt if one of us gets cancer.

My husbands is completely free so all 3 of us are under that. $30 co pays for our primary, $60 for specialists, $750 for hospital admissions. No deductible and 100% covered after copay. This is an HMO.

I am a nurse- we use to be covered under mine. It was $77/month for just me, when I added my husband and baby it end up being $275/month. My copays for our primary and urgent care for $20, $50 for ER. No deductible and paid 100%. HMO. So copays were less but since my husbands is free we switched to his.

I've had really good luck with my HMO's since we have no deductibles. (minus infertility that I paid 100% Out of pocket for IVF) but I otherwise I have had 2 surgeries I only had to pay a $60 copay for. It cost $250 total to have my baby. All prenatal visits free.

Does anyone know the recommended percentage of health insurance on total income?

Eta: I found a figure, if your share of premiums is more than 9.5% of household income that is considered unaffordable. Full article at bankrate.com.

@looch: I believe that is for an employee only plan and not for additional dependents.
