And if it was with your SO, how many years had you been together/married?
I'm 27 and DH is 31 and we're looking into buying our first home within the next 6 months. We've been married for 6 years. We had looked before, when I was pregnant with DS, but ultimately timing wasn't great.
I'm excited at the thought of possibly having our own home! I feel like we've been waiting for so long.

I was 27 and hubs was 31 and we had been married for just over a year. We have been hear a year now and its fantastic.

@lilteacherbee: well it's not a for sure thing yet. We've done an initial consult for preapproval. But waiting another couple months to get preapproved. Also we know exactly where we want to buy a house and there's a limited selection in our price range so I worry we may have to wait awhile for the right house to go on the market! We definitely can wait but it's hard to 
we either have to time it so we close/move in at least 6 weeks before my due date (end of March), or wait til the baby is a few months old.

@Mrs. Pen: It is great to know you can paint or hang stuff without having to undo it later or change the light fixtures or bathroom towel racks and know that you are putting money into something that is yours for a long time (or that you will get a return on if you sell). Plus I have found its easier to buy holiday decorations and the like because I know they will work every year, instead of changing as we moved from rental to rental

We were both 28, and had been married for three weeks. We got back from our honeymoon on Tuesday and bought a house on Saturday. In retrospect it's shocking because while that's totally how I shop for everything (impulse decisions, basically) my husband has been known to spend a month debating between pairs of shoes.

@snarkybiochemist: exactly! I've decorated our apartments, but not in the same way I would a home we own. We've never been allowed to paint our rentals. And the lack of space has held us back from things like getting a dog, having a chest freezer so we can buy and cook in bulk, etc. it's all those little things that make such a big difference!

@Mrs. Pen: Well hopefully, it won't be too long of a process! We were pre-approved and I think we started seriously looking in August. We pretty much had just a couple neighborhoods in mind. I think we saw less than 5 houses before we decided and put an offer in. They accepted in late September and we closed in November. It was a stressful process, but fairly quick!
Oh, and my LO turned one, we closed on the house, I started a new job, and I found out I was pregnant all within 10 days! I had all these plans for painting and decorating and then DH ended up finally painting a week before our second was born

DH and I were 22 when we bought our first home and we had been married 9 months. We're in our second home now but I still have fond memories of the first one - we brought babies one and two home there!

We were both 33 and had been married for four years. We were looking for almost three years and had offered on a dozen other houses.
I'm glad we landed where we did when we did. We couldn't afford to buy our house now with the way the market has moved.

We still haven't! I'm almost 33 and dh is 34, and have been married 6 years. We live in NYC though where costs are astronomical and will be almost certainly moving in less than 2 years

I was 28, & I bought a condo. DH bought his first house at 31. Later we lived in his house together and we bought this house together when we were 35.

I was 30 and DH was 31. We had been together for almost 9 years. It's definitively not our forever home since we're hoping to move back across the country, but the houses in our neighborhood are super affordable and we had a downpayment saved (thinking originally we'd be buying somewhere much more expensive). Our mortgage is way cheaper than our rent was, and we're hoping to turn this into a rental when we move back home. Which will hopefully happen eventually!

24 & 29. I was happy at the time but in the current market we feel a little stuck. We were planning to move into a larger home (in the same area) but it's crazyyyy right now. Now we are looking into an income rental property outside of the GTA to invest in until the market changes.

@Reese: interest rates are better now than when we were originally looking five years ago, but house prices have gone up so we can't quite get as much house for the same price anymore. It can be frustrating because I already know we'll have to compromise on many things. We have to be more realistic this time, but still be happy enough to plan on at least ten years in a house. We may have to be patient!
@MenagerieMama: oh yeah, our first home won't be our forever home either that likely won't happen until we both advance significantly in our careers and that won't be until we pay down student loans so we can go back for grad degree for me and Ph.D for him.
@nana87: oh gosh I couldn't imagine buying in NYC. I feel like I'd never be able to save enough for a down payment!
DH is actually from Long Island and we've toyed with the idea of moving back- but house prices are a bit of a deterrent. If we wanted to buy in the city we love there, we'd need about half a million and I just can't stomach that (I live in the Midwest- and our budget here is around $250k, so it's over double what we could afford with current salaries!). and I'm sure to you in the city even half a mil sounds better lol!!

Not sure how old DH was when he bought the condo. We were married (2 years) and he was 35 and I was a couple days from 34 (and 34 weeks pregnant) when we closed on our house.

We bought our condo when we were 33, had been married 3.5 years, but it was a weird situation where we had been renting and the landlord decided to sell. By we knew we would be moving within a couple years so it still never felt long term like we could invest in changes for US, vs for resale. Like we never even bothered painting.
We are 35 and just bought our house last month, where we plan to stay at least until the girls are out of high school. It feels really nice!!

24. Bought it three months before our wedding, but it was at a REALLY low point in the market and our mortgage was hundreds of dollars less than our rent.
Granted, since then, we've spent a boatload of money fixing things up, but I'm still glad we did it. (It was six years ago.)
