If you found out about someone's pregnancy (someone really close like a sister!) through a holiday card, sent specifically as an announcement that they were expecting.
Would you feel differently if it wasn't someone really close to you? Like a cousin?

Someone sister close id be confused and maybe a little hurt, unless it was something they only sent to our immediate family or something. But if I found out the same was great aunt Joan did, is be put off. But would get over it.

Ultimately their pregnancy has nothing to do with "me" while I may have been surprised I would not address it and get over it quickly. But my Mom told me my sister was pregnant the first time, the second time she dropped a note in the mail.

@Ajsmommy: one of my friends did this- I ised to see her a lot at play dates but hadn't in a while. So I liked it, I was so excited for them. But that's not the same as a sister.

I have had this happen several times-combo pregnancy announcement and Christmas card. I usually knew before the card went out.

someone close, upset and mad (one of my BFFs did this as a joke and i was pissed until i read the back of the card! and i told her as much!); someone not close, excited! we also got one of these cards (from old friends who we moved away from) and i was thrilled for them!

I announced through a holiday card. But I told the people I was really close with personally. I'd be a little confused if it was like a sister, but they could've also tried surprising you. I think it could come across as odd to you because it's through mail. If she tried finding another fun way to surprise you, would you feel differently?

Hmm. Maybe my announcement idea wasn't such a good idea.
I was thinking of sending Valentine cards with LO in a big brother shirt since we're not local to anyone, nor will we see anyone anytime soon. I was trying to think of something more fun than just a call or text, but it sounds like people will be hurt or think it's a ploy for attention.

I"d have flashes of tons of different feelings, but really the only folks I feel have a right to be upset they didn't get told in person are your own folks!

I sent a card to my parents with a picture of DS in a big bro sweatshirt as our announcement. I wrote a little note about the next one coming in June. Since mail isn't common I thought it would be fun. They loved it! I think as long as you personalize it, it would be fine. So maybe have the card with a picture and write a note by hand in it. I definitely would not just have a generic picture card with printed text (like must people's christmas cards) and mail that with nothing personalized about it.

I think if you're sending the card to a few people as a special announcement, It will be nice!
If you send to a lot of people, some people will think they should have known first, you know?

@Applesandbananas: I think that is a cute idea for your wider circle but not the close ones. To announce LO#2, I made a video of LO#1 telling the news and sent it to our close family (our parents and siblings). LO%1 was 3 though so she could explain and answer my questions.

@Applesandbananas: a valentine card is different to me! I send Christmas cards out to a lot of people so it would be weird if I didn't tell close friends before that, and I was also sending it to our pediatrician, ya know? But I don't expect a card around that time of year so i'd be thrilled and not upset at all. I would make it personalized though so it doesn't look like a mass sent thing!

It depends.... If it was a generic valentines card that everyone was getting, I would be a little miffed (but still happy). If it was a special "you're going to be auntie again!" card, I would think it was really special.

I wouldn't be upset at all. Also, as a sibling that could have just been easily told via phone or text I would love that they sent me an actual card to announce their pregnancy. I mean sending a card is so out of the ordinary for my family, so that would feel extra special in my case.
I don't feel there needs to be a hierarchy of who should know first unless you tell the big mouth that may share your news before you get a chance to!

@Applesandbananas: I have a friend that did special Valentines Cards for grandparents to announce #2. She was only 8 weeks so just told grandparents. But it was a picture of LO holding the ultrasound picture and it said something along the lines Make room for one more in your heart.

I think the fact that it's Valentine's cards and still early in you pregnancy is really cute. In the original post, I was imagining Christmas holiday cards and being much further along and having the announcement go out to the whole card list. I don't know anyone who sends Valentine's cards so assume the people you are sending it to are on the "special" list.

I think a Valentine's card is very different from a Christmas card. I say go for it. We announced our second through a photo that was sent via txt or FB messenger.

I think if that is the way one wants to share their news that is their right! I wouldn't be upset at all!!!
