what would you tell them? Would you encourage or discourage it?
My cousin's daughter wants to major in architecture. I neither encourage nor discourage. 
I just let her know that schooling is A LOT more work than most people know. The job is not that glamorous and pay is pretty cruddy! haha

I am a graphic designer and I would encourage it. Although I'd warn them against thinking they're going to always get to make pretty things.

I'm a teacher. I would definitely encourage it, but only if they are in it for the right reasons. I hate people who choose teaching primarily for the summers off!

I wouldn't discourage them at all. My SIL fell into my industry and I tales to her about it. Her function is different than mine though, so I don't think I was that helpful in the end.

I'm a teacher and I would encourage it if it is something they really want to do. I get so upset by veteran and close to retirement teachers telling future/new teachers that they're making a huge mistake. I had a student teacher this year and some of the older teachers badgered her constantly about making a bad choice and told her to run away on a daily basis. She took it well, but it upset me that people act that negatively. All jobs have pros and cons.

@jhd: @mrs. 64: @lilteacherbee: yep! I teach too, but I'd discourage someone who didn't have a passion in their heart for it. I try to be honest with new teachers ready to enter the profession: it's hard and there's a lot of bs floating around, but it's So Worth It if you love teaching!!

It depends who it is. For the majority of people I'd say no, stay far far away. But there are some people who just are a good fit so I'd probably give some warnings of how to navigate but I wouldn't discourage someone if I thought they would enjoy it.
@mrs. 64: My mom is a teacher and I get what you're saying, I don't know that she discourages anyone from going into teaching but she is very vocal about thinking most of the changes are dumb and just make teaching worse and the kids learn less. Most of my family/neighbors are educators so I hear that kind of talk a lot.

I work in Construction (in the office) and I would totally encourage. I LOVE my industry. I try to tell my hubby all the time that he should come work for my company.

I'm a software engineer, so I'd encourage it, but also try to give them realistic expectations. A lot of kids thing they can go into Computer Science and then start programming video games, and it's definitely not that easy. So I'd probably try to figure out why they want to go into that major and give them some tips to help them if that's what they really want to do.
