Absolutely! My parents have a perfect house - not too big, not too small, not average but not too fancy and a gorgeous backyard. We tried talking them into selling it to us when they want to downsize but I don't think they are ready for that any time soon.

The house I grew up in has been razed so it's not possible to buy it... but it was a great house and in an amazing location -- I would have loved to own it if we could afford it! Real estate prices in that neighborhood skyrocketed in the past 20 years.

In fact, our across the street neighbors did exactly this... the original owners were my friend's grandparents & their dad grew up in that home. Years later, he returned and raised his own kids there!

Funny enough, the layout of our house is very similar to the one I grew up in. Maybe I was drawn to my house because of that...?

We moved quite a bit while I was growing up, I loved two of the homes we lived in. The first was a gorgeous home in Anacortes, Wa. It was about two blocks from the sea, and there was so much to do there. We couldn't afford it now though, that town is an expensive tourist town.

The second was the coolest home ever, a converted dairy barn completely restored. It sat on ten acres and was perfect. We live in the same town, the current owners have let it go sad state..

Their current home is on 25 acres, half in pinot noir grapes, no thank you! Way too much work!!

Yep! This might actually be an option for us. My parents still own the house I was raised in (ages 1-16). We moved the summer before senior year and their house was on the market for awhile, but they eventually took it off. My grandmother is using it as her "beach house" and she stays there maybe one weekend a month. My dad has mentioned that its open to us of we ever wanted it. Right now, DH would have an hour drive to work, but we've talked about the possibility if he were get a job at a school that's closer.

No, house is nice but the street is too busy now.

I LOVE my parents' house, and they're actually going to be selling it in the next couple years. I would love to own it but unless I were to get a job there, that's a no go. I actually would love to live in that town--it's a university town with an amazing school so teaching there would be a dream for me!--but it'd be a long shot! Plus they'll most likely be selling before I even go on the job market. There's actually a chance that my brother and his family are moving there though, and I'm jealous.

dh's parents' house...not so much at all. the house is too big but with I lay out that I don't particularly like, and I don't like the location.

I grew up in a great house! It would be neat if I could purchase it someday, however, it probably won't ever happen. Real estate in my hometown is ridiculous!!

I would absolutely buy my parents! But they'll be there for a long time. They're only mid 40s, haha.

The house I lived in til I was 11, no. It's in a yucky town with bad schools (which is why I went to private school a half hour away). The house we moved to after & my parents still live in, hell yea! It's just under 3,000sq ft, 2 car garage, pool, very nice neighborhood with sidewalks on both sides, walking distance to town pool rec area, convenient to highways and has a fantastic school system. If only we could afford it, Hahahaha. We wouldn't even consider buying my ILs' house, it's gross, but it's in a decent neighborhood, so if a not gross house was available there and his parents moved out of the neighborhood, we'd absolutely buy it, wouldn't buy it if they still lived there though.

Yep, but mainly for the land, I'd probably do a lot of renovations to the house itself. I'd do an addition for a master suite and change the layout downstairs.

No. The house my parents own is small, poor layout and kind of run down. It needs a lot of repairs. I feel badly for my parents because they definitely owe more than its worth now so they feel stuck. The land though is very nice. Over five acres, on a lake and pond. Trees, room for my dads gardening, hills and flat land. It's really pretty. It's just the house that isn't so nice.

Same with my IL's house. Very run down and small in a sketchy neighborhood in New York.

We are buying my grandparent's home. They lived here from when I was in 2nd grade until 26. I've lived here for 3 years.

Nope, the neighborhood has gone downhill and my mom and her boyfriend did some DIY reno and in my opinion it's kind of shoddy in some areas.

@Mrs. Polish; I am with you. We are in the house Eric grew up in (the farm) and when we first moved in I had a few small hissy fits over him teasing me that I was putting things just where his mom had them. We've been here over two years now, and it took me a long time to feel like it was my house. Now I really love it!

Our parents homes are not for us, so no. But if they were I would happily buy them.

@bluestriped bee: My parents are currently in the process of selling their house to my brother for a lot less than it's worth. The house is worth $330,000, but they're gifting them back $80,000 of the sale to use as a down payment. I have no idea how it all works, but some mortgage broker set it up for them!

@bluestriped bee: no, we just approached the mortgage company with the purchase price and closed. I'm not aware of a gift tax that was paid. We weren't married at the time, not sure if that makes a difference or if it varies by state.

Yes! I loooove the house I grew up in. After living there for 20 years my parents sold it I wish they would have kept it for us but oh well. Maybe one day.
