i have lived in apartment buildings for the past 10+ years, so i am not used to anyone knocking/ringing the doorbell without my prior knowledge that they were coming. if i did live in a house, i would probably be freaked out by someone coming up to my house because i'm not used to it, and wouldn't open the door.

@Bao: Oh gosh, that makes me scared for you that he was so covered up and went to a back door! That would be the part that would most make me fear a scam! Like if he was trying to check your place out to see what you had to steal inside. In full disclosure I'm also a naturally paranoid person.

Don't feel bad... you didn't have any cash anyway. Be careful answering the door! That scares me!

@Boogs: That happened to my parents, their house was scoped out and they were broken into twice, robbed once. In a VERY nice area, although in a country setting. There had been people to their house in the weeks prior in unmarked vans trying to "sell" something, turns out the company doesn't even exist. Off topic but still shows you have to be cautious. I'm not answering next time!!

@Bao: oh I totally get what you're saying, I just HATE shoveling snow so if I can pay someone I count it as a win and don't care how they spend the money. Shoveling is hard work; I'll stay warm inside, thanks!

@Bao: In my neighborhood they were going around soliciting just to see if people would answer their doors to figure out when people were home so they knew when to come back and break in! They actually got a few places before they went on one where a person was home, and they were finally arrested at least.

If he was shoveling and I had the cash I would have said yes. Even if he scammed me and didnt have kids but shoveled he still did a hard's day work to earn the money

I never have cash on me, and if a strange man knocked on my door while DH wasn't home, I wouldn't answer it .

But if I did have cash and DH was home, yeah. I'd say yes.
