...does it change your opinion of them?
I have a friend who is doing a job search. She uses a hotmail address, and I suggested that she change it to gmail for her search. She demurred and I didn't press it. I do think though that a hotmail address isn't likely to help a job search... unless you're applying to work at Microsoft!
If someone gives you their email address and you can see which service they use, does it change your opinion of them?

No, not at all. It takes something a little more than an email address to make me change my opinion about someone. I am a yahoo user, hope that doesn't change anyone's opinion about me

Nah, I only judge them if they have a stupid email address like toocute4u2013@ hotmail gmail or yahoo.

hm... I never really thought about it. I really like my hotmail account. Although it's a "live.ca" account, not hotmail.

Nope. I really didn't even know people thought about it other that what @autumnlove said about silly names. We get applications from sexxxylexxi@whatever and all I see is the name. I would never hire someone with an address like that but gmail vs yahoo vs hotmail? Definitely not an issue for me.

I agree with pp about the crazy email addresses though! That is more of a deterring factor than the host.

I guess things are different in the tech sector! Most people have their own domain names and custom emails, so a Hotmail or Yahoo address really stands out...

I didn't think the host mattered much. Like PPs have said, it's very much what's in front of the @ that matters.

Yes! My clients provide me with their emails and I am surprised by the still AOL and Hotmail users. Get with the time! Lol. I am most impressed by my clients who have their business name as their email domain.

Yeah I do laugh a little bit about hotmail addresses too! I dont work in tech at all either. I switched to gmail when I got married. But it wouldn't really change my opinion, I would just assume that they have had the email for a long time.
Stupid names, though, like 2cute4u, I would judge harshly.

But I definitely see that it's not fair to apply that standard to casual consumers... I feel bad now that I said something to my Hotmail-using friend!

Haha. DH still uses Hotmail and I use Yahoo. I have Gmail, too, but it's just a hassle to start using it full-time when everything goes to Yahoo.
But yes, we are fairly tech-savvy, and no, I do not type in all capslock

I'm always a bit shocked when I don't see gmail after the @, But it doesnt bother me. 
I finally persuaded DH to switch to gmail just last year. Gmail is just so aesthetically pleasing!

I work in tech and help with hiring/screening and it does not matter to me! I only notice if the username is not professional like SexyLittleGirl or something.

I don't care where their email account is (I still use yahoo myself), but I roll my eyes when I see something like "cutiepie" or "sexygurl" or "2cute4u" or "fratboi".
Ugh. My opinion of them drops though the floor.

I only judge you if you still have an aol email address. I assume you probably still have dial up Internet too...
I still have my hotmail email account. I have a gmail account too, but I'm just too lazy to switch everything over to it.
And I agree with everyone who posted that silly email names (actually, anything other than a variation on firstnamelastname@domain.com) are the WORST. I take phone inquiries for weddings at my job, and I ALWAYS spell back the email, because repeating back, "So, that's "prettykitty5947@aol.com"?" Is just embarrassing.

Oh boy, you will think I'm super lame, cause I still "use" a netscape email account. It's for all my junk mail, and I haven't opened it in years. My regular email, that I prefer to keep all spam out of, is an iCloud account. Talk about opposites!

Use yahoo for junk and other, gmail I strictly my personal email. For a job interview, I'd use gmail. If I sign up for accounts, typically use yahoo.

Yeah, I think of gmail and personal/business domains as superior. Yahoo is fine, but hotmail and aol emails are weird to me. I work at a company that deals with photographers and I think it's weird that they have an AOL account because it's not an old address! They had to set it up recently!
But also agree with PPs that said that weird names like sexykitty, etc are probably more offensive to the general professional public regardless of domain.

I have my own domain...but never thought that it was any more savvy than having an email elsewhere.
The one thing that does impress me e-mail wise is having your name @gmail without modifiers (i.e. bob.jones@gmail.com vs theoriginalbob.j0n3s021482@gmail.com).

I still have yahoo because I've had it for years and most of my logins use that same email.
I have had some issues with yahoo but I don't want to switch to another service. I do have gmail accounts but they are not my primary accounts.
As for other people emails, I don't really care what service they use as long as its not something from high school-ish.

I have 3 gmail accounts and use them for resumesmand various specific purposes, but I guess I'm so comfortable with my old AOL setup, that's what I use and check daily. Yeah, I still get weird looks and ribbing from people about it, but I guess old habits die hard!

Yep, I always notice whether they put hotmail or aol ontheir resumes. It might mean they are resistant to change or not very computer literate so I can make sure to include more questions about change and technology into their interview. I never allude directly to their e-mail though.

I judge AOL and hotmail for everyone (even my parents have gmail), and when my customers (telco companies) don't have company email addresses (joe @ phone company dot com) and use gmail instead. Come on! You're a large company!

I tend not to judge people based on the domain, only the address (qtee1984@hotmail), but for my own job searches I exclusively use my grad school.alum.edu account or my gmail if I absolutely have to.
