If someone gives you their email, and they use yahoo or hotmail or gmail...

Nope unless it's something bizarre/inappropriate for their age (e.g. 2cute4u).

I have a hotmail account - have had it since college - it's not a cutsy name, just my last name. I don't intend to change it b/c I really don't think anybody really cares about my domain email address, but I guess people do which is really odd - it's just a form of communication and the address to send it to.

The comments about inappropriate addresses (2cute4u) reminds me of how when I was screening resumes we actually used to throw out the ones with clearly unprofessional email addresses without even reading the resumes.

Sort of! I assume that if someone gives me a yahoo or hotmail address that they are sending me to their *junk* account! That's what I do . . . my gmail is my personal non-junk account

Hubby is the head of his IT dept and still has yahoo for his personal email...but he honestly doesn't use it much. He also still uses an ancient flip phone. Such an anomaly! And yes, I judge him a little on both accounts

Yes, on a personal level I do judge them. It makes me cringe that DH uses Yahoo and won't switch! But I don't think it impedes job search abilities in most fields, though I totally see your point @mrbee that it would in the tech sector.

Haha, I totally judge people who don't use gmail! When it's yahoo/hotmail/aol I figure they just don't want to have to move everything to a new account, but if it's like a roadrunner or prodigy address, I assume they won't get my email and aren't computer savvy.

So how do I make the switch to gmail? Do I forward all of my yahoo email to my gmail.

Tell me why gmail is so much better than yahoo. Yeah, I know yahoo is slow.

It's hard... I don't want to get rid of my email that I've used for the past 10 years! Lol! Help me sever my ties with yahoo!

@bluestriped bee: I don't see anything wrong with my yahoo account and can't imagine anyone judging me for it. I see no need to change. I already have way too many accounts, including a gmail for different purposes.

Wonder if my girls are going to future-hate me for starting them yahoo accounts to scrapbook their various exploits?

@bluestriped bee: If you do make a change, I wouldn't make it to gmail or any other website. (I'm sure something will come along to dethrone gmail sooner or later.) I would buy a domain (e.g. bluestripedbee.com), and use something like Google Apps for Your Domain to power the email.

That way, you can always change your email provider to something else and still keep the same email address.

I've had the same yahoo email address since the 7th grade!!! It's almost a part of my identity. I do have a gmail address now too though. I just got an android phone, and I really like google calendar so I use it for that.
