Would you do it?
A major event is coming to my city in 2015 and people are already renting out houses like mine for $15-20k. We don't have a lot of hotels here so this is what people are turning to. We have already been asked about it and although it seems like a great idea, I'm worried about someone trashing my house. It would take so much work to clear out all of our belongings (clothes, filing cabinets, etc.) too.

My friend lives in Augusta where there masters are held. She rents her house out for $6k for the week. They rent to corporations mostly and then just move all of their stuff into their basement or one room and put a lock on it. Since they focus on corporate stays, they have never had an issue at all. I say go for it!

I would consider it. It wouldn't cost much to rent a pod that you could load up and still make a profit.

Heck yeah. Provided the proper safeguards were in place for damage and liability, I'd be all over it.

My parents rented their house to bubba Watson a few years ago. Tiger woods rented the house behind theirs.

Hell yeah! My aunt lives in Annapolis and would always rent her house out during graduation week at the Naval Academy.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: yes! I mean, I don't think Tiger Woods would rent out my house haha but another pro golfer is renting out my neighbors house! We live within walking distance to the golf course so at least we have that.

@mrbee: well, E will be 3 and B will be 6 (whoa) so I'm assuming they would be able to sleep at my parents house just fine. It's during the summer so it won't interrupt with school.

@HLK208: my parents live across the street so it was kind of a no brainier.. Even if they didn't rent their house out, they were leaving town. It was chaos! I lived at home at the time so I didn't get a vote we went on vacation that week.

@HLK208: sounds like it's worth considering! Since you'd have to find a place to stay, I'd maybe cost out what your real profit would be... after paying for a place to stay and any other extra costs. It may end up being just a few grand, in which case maybe it's not as worth it. Or maybe ask for a higher price and don't do it unless someone hits that number?
ETA: oops didn't see you could stay at your parents! That's awesome!!

15K is a lot of money. If I could go somewhere fun/stay with family for the month and if it was not a super duper hassle, I'd probably do it.

Given you have a place to stay - I say heck yes! That is a huge chunk of change. I also think that someone who would be able pay 15-20k for ONE MONTHS RENT isn't going to trash your house.

@HLK208: you could plan your summer vacation around it, plan to go away for a week or 2 so you aren't with your parents for a whole month. and you have the option of including the garage or not- you could use that to store personal items or store them in the basement. throw a lock on there, even a temporary latching one with a combination lock on it.

@HLK208: well then mandate a security deposit of 1-2k and see if you can write up some type of legal-ish lease that includes rules of the house.

I'd have:
- a heft deposit
- rules like No Smoking No Pets Do not move furniture around
- put different sheets on the beds! And maybe a protective covering over my mattress
- put all my confidential files in our safe and lock our office door
I'd also let them know I will be staying 5 mins away (you can do drive bus and check ins, legally)
Annnnnd....I'd hire a team of cleaning people the day the renters leave for like $300.
My dh and I just talked, for a home like ours, he said no less than 20k but we have 5bedrooms and and underground pool so, it would fit more people and the pool maintenance is costly.

I would totally do it! What about using a site like airbnb to help broker it so to speak? You would lose some of your profit but it would provide you with some insurance coverage.

I would! And just have a great agreement in place. We rented a condo for only TWO NIGHTS and the lady had this HUGE agreement we had to sign and we had to give her a $500 deposit... it was only like $250 to rent the place! So I'd say if someone was spending $15K they would be fine with a deposit!

I might not do it. For us, I'm not sure the inconvenience would be worth the pay-off. I guess it depends how much stuff is have to move around and secure. I already work so hard a it is that if I had to put in a weeks worth of work to pull it off, it wouldn't be worth it. Of course I'm exhausted right now, so that may have something to do with my current mindset!

I wouldn't even have to think about it..,give me a day to pack away my important things and the house is yours for a month. (: hehe too bad this would NEVER be an issue since we live in the middle of nowhere (:

DEFINITELY! I'd be careful to screen the renters though. I'd pack away everything into a locked room or POD and it would be completely worth it. I heard of this happening when the superbowl came to my city but we didn't live close enough to make it feasible, plus we were renting!
