Wow cool! I think I would but I'd have to figure out where to stay since we have no relatives nearby.
I just looked up the event... Maybe DH and I will make a day trip to that event!

@HLK208: I wouldn't do it. The inconvenience and possibility of people messing my house up isn't worth 15-20.

I would do it. Make sure you add in a damage deposit. 20k with the damage deposit would make me happy.

I'd do it, and like @turtledoves said, be very specific about rules and make sure you demand a deposit. I rented my apartment out for a week when the Democratic National Convention was in town, and although it was a bit inconvenient to stow away personal items, for the money it was well worth it!

@HLK208: is this through an agency or through an individual?
My parents went through an agent and we did have to lock up our belongings. There was a website set up specifically for US open rentals, almost like a real estate website, where the pros could view homes before renting. Someone came & stages our house, then took photos of it.
There was a rental agreement, an insurance policy and certain provisions to be provided (ie we had to clean out the fridge & make sure the garage was empty so they could park inside, etc)
It was very formal and safe.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: my parents friends are close with a pro golfer so it's not a random person but not through the agency either. I'll look into the site if this falls through though!

Definitely.
I would also have a hefty security/damage deposit in place, and include professional cleaning once they are gone. Oh, and no-smoking, for sure!!

I would. We have rented out our place for much less to total strangers for a week or two at a time and it was absolutely fine.
I would definitely ask for a big deposit though, like $1000+ to be refunded after the house has been left in good order. And, of course, as many safety checks as possible beforehand, references, access to Facebook accounts, google stalking, etc.
Also agree that you should go on vacation for at east part of that time.
Is there any sort of tax liability? When we rented, we just took cash, but it was less than $1000....if someone is giving you that much money, I would assume you would have to report it?

I'm curious about this too....the Grand Prix is near our house and we could rent it out for several thousand.... I just wonder what to do with the personal items.

@lamariniere: probably. That's a good point. My tax guy is 3 doors down and he plans to rent his house out too so I'll probably ask him soon!

Without a second thought though DH would want to make friends with the golfer!

Oh my gosh, yes! And then I'd spend $3K of that to rent a house on the water for a month somewhere while my house is rented. Like a vacation house.

I know this event if we lived closer to it and got an offer, we'd do it.

I would do it, but I wonder if something were to happen, what recourse I have on my homeowner's insurance policy? Just because people have the money to spend doesn't mean they respect your personal belongings!
I'd also be skeptical of it from a mortgage perspective, assuming you have one and it's your primary residence? I would just want to cover all my bases, I hate surprises.

Hecks! To the Yes! Unfortunately I don't think we could because we rent the place ourselves.

@HLK208: haha when I saw this I said no way because we're in our forever home. But now I know what event I think DH would be open to it because he LOVES golf.

@HLK208 We rented out our house for a weekend once (there was a big game in town right by our place, 3 nights for 3k!) but we were sure to have a short term lease. I have leases for our rental properties, but adjusted it for a short term tenant. Not only do you have to consider damage to your property, but you also have to consider liability (if they drink at your house and then drive somewhere and get in an accident, you could be liable or any other of the many possible liability issues).
Also, you might want to buy some throw away sheets/towels so they don't use YOUR sheets, etc.
