That you had to use for work, everyday, etc. what would you get? Most of my handbags were ruined in storage a couple years ago, and I need something versatile, classic, and probably black.

I use it for work, as a mom bag, when I'm alone - the only time I switch is if I'm going to a wedding or out somewhere and I don't want to carry a big purse, which is rare.

I have a Miche Prima. It's large and the shells are interchangeable, so I can keep all my stuff in the bag and then just switch the shell. I also bought a long strap for it so I can wear it cross-shoulder if I want to.

a crossbody feels too casual for work because it's more events than an office.. i think i need something more structured?

Longchamp doesn't have much structure, but I like all the different colors. Banana Republic has some awesome leather and structured nylon totes. LV checker pattern is my dream tote, but I first would have to get over the fact the bag doesn't close.

@Mrs. Bee: What about a cross-body that also has shorter straps? I have a black leather one from BR that has both, and the longer strap can be removed if you want it to look less casual.

i would suggest a Saint Laurent cabas Y bag. They're classic looking. You can have the option of holding them or you can put them over your shoulder since the handles are large enough. they hold just about everything but look sleek. And they dont have a logo plastered all over it so it's not too flashy either.
If not a YSL bag, I'd go with the prada executive tote bag. Structured so it's beautiful for work but also great for everyday. It also comes with a strap you can attach for a more casual look.

I really love Kate Spade bags and Brighton bags (with long enough shoulder straps that they sit comfortably under my arm).

@Mrs. Bee: Not my choice for "the one bag", but I have an older similar style of this TB bag, and I find it works wonderfully for so many occasions. I can wear it cross body, or tuck the shoulder strap in and use the handles for more formal events. It's structured, and fits so much, but still maintains a relatively small size!

@Mrs. Bee: can I ask you what happened with your bags in storage? I have a couple of expensive bags and other belongings in storage (air conditioned indoor unit as I assume yours were) and it never even occurred to me my stuff could get damaged barring a fire or tornado or some other huge disaster.

I have a bag similar to the one below in a different pattern. I like it for when I have to go to conferences because it's big enough for papers. But it's also good for home when I go out and have to bring around some toddler stuff (toys, diapers, snacks, etc.).

@Mrs. Bee: anything in Cole Haan's pebbled leather. Its pretty much indestructible, looks awesome year after year, and is classic. I have the village lunch tote in gold, black, and camel and they look good with everything, resist water when it rains, have plenty of room and the straps are that perfect length where you can wear it on your shoulder or on your forearm.

@Meow: water leaked onto some of the boxes and there was mold/damage. it was covered by their insurance. it sucked, but it gave me a good excuse to purge. i just have no handbags now!

@Mrs. High Heels: I have the exact bag in the faded aluminum as well and if I am just running out without either boys that's what I use. I also have it in red. It's not too big nor too small and comfortable to wear and is really durable. I can't tell you how abused mine is but still looks good, except the leather is softer than my red one.
