At what age did you start?
With my son I think we started a little before age 2, but with my daughter we started at about 16-17 months!! Besides having quite a strong personality, she has also seems to have picked up on everything (including bad tricks) early from her big bro.
She's only had maybe 3 time outs, all for hitting I think, and she knew EXACTLY what was happening as she's seen her brother on that same little carpet square.

I tried to give my almost 18-month old a timeout the other day and he laughed hysterically at me.

@hellobeeboston: hahahaha that is awesome. Yeah, I think it would not have made sense to my little one if she didn't have her brother warming that rug every so often. She was totally OUTRAGED when I told her to go sit there. She tried to get up a couple times but she understood perfectly.

We started early, 13-14 months. They have been very effective. Now my son is 3 and if I threaten to send him to the corner, he usually starts to behave.

Around 2. He didn't have the self-control to sit still much before then.

Around 2. He's 2.5 still doesn't get it and basically time out means I carry him to the stairs, hold his legs so he sits, and I ask him why he's in time out, he tells me, apologizes, and then we're done. He would absolutely not sit still somewhere by himself for any amount of time.

We've been starting time-outs with LO, who is 19 months, but he doesn't seem to really get it at this point. I think he thinks it's fun, and he usually just laughs.

We started around 15 months by putting him in the pack n' play. He's 2 now and we just stick him in the corner. He totally understands he's been bad when we put him in time out.
