...what kind do you have? DH is looking into a new (used) car and he wants an SUV, but one of the smaller ones, aka not a total gas hog. I drive a Ford Escape and we really like it, but we don't want two of the same car. Any recommendations?

@Ash: We saw some of those while looking! I really liked those but didn't really check on prices. I will look it up now:)

I have a RAV4, and ILs have a CR-V. Both get about the same MPGs (23-26ish). I have had good luck with Toyotas, and I love my car. Got it because it has 4wd (which was a must) but also isn't huge and as much of a gas guzzler. ILs love their CR-V too.

My DH has a Toyota Highlander. His family all have Toyotas. I got really nervous after the issues they were having a few years ago, so I would just be a bit wary about that, but he loves it and it's lasted him over 10 years with no major problems!

I have a Kia soul. I guess I wouldn't call it a suv, just a midget suv maybe? But it gets great gas mileage and has a huge trunk and seats 5.

Honda CRV! I get about 27.5 miles to the gallon, I trust the Honda name for reliability, and it was the cheapest of the ones we were looking at.

We loved our Honda CR-V! We went through THREE! It's like a sedan but with the room of an SUV. Great gas mileage. It was too small once we had our second child so now we're in a Mazda CX-9 which we love, but uses so much gas.

We replaced our Ford Escape (flooded in hurricane sandy) with a Jeep Liberty. I like the Liberty but gas mileage isn't the best and there's less front leg room than the Escape.

I have a Nissan X-Terra and I love it!
(this is a Google picture, but mine is the same color!) I don't recommend it in Orange though.. don't ever pick a car on the fact that it makes you happy one day when you are 15, because then you're stuck with a big bright orange SUV.

@LindsayInNYC: Hmm DH mentioned something about a Jeep, but it was a Grand Cherokee Laredo but they didn't look as great on gas either.

We have a Chev Equinox, aside from the transmission and engine being replaced in the first year we had it.....we do love it!
....thank-you warranty!

We just bought a Nissan Pathfinder...they just redesigned them for 2013 and they're super nice! I can't wait until it comes in now

@Bao: I don't know if other Jeep models are any different but aside from the Liberty, a lot of others look nice (Patriot, Compass, etc.)

I have an Xterra, but I don't recommend it on the fact that it has such stiff suspension and it's hard to get in and out of the backseat. Otherwise I love it

@MrsTiz: hahaha I have a green car and love it! I've always had bright cars!

@anonysquire: I have a Green Soul too! I love it esp after having a gas guzzling jeep liberty for 8 years.
My husband drives a subaru forrester and I love his car too.

@MrsTiz: haha! I wanted a bright orange or yellow XTerra too! I probably would have bought that in my 20s if it were in my budget at the time
I drive a Nissan Murano and love it. It's a mid-sized SUV and is really comfortable.

@Chillybear: how many people have sang to you at a stoplight? Like 3 different people have pulled up next to me at a stoplight and start singing the hamster commercial song....

@anonysquire: no one yet ( i've had the car about a year) but when my best friend got married this year she tried to convince the reception manager to let me drive them into the reception since that was their entrance song

We have Chevy traverse. I also liked the Chevy equinox but we decided to get something bigger.

@Bao: it's not horrible. We average 20 mi/gal. I know the equinox is better sine its smaller and only a V6 I believe.

I have a GMC Acadia which is a huge gas hog, but we love it!
I use to have an Acura MDX which was my favorite car I have ever owned!

Mazda cx-9. We actually just traded it in yesterday but it is a great crossover utility vehicle.
