I have a Toyota highlander, love it.
ILs have a ford edge and it has been terrible in the snow!

I have a Pacifica which gets an average of 14mpg it's super comfy but even with awd it's not that great in the snow. My mom has a highlander hybrid which is much better on gas, her 3rd row sucks though, it's decent in the snow, not as bad as my Pacifica but not as good as DH's old Cherokee or my old trooper.

@HLK208: if you get the 2.0t it gets great gas mileage.

Another vote for Honda CRV. Love mine. Car insurance is actually cheaper than my last car. I don't understand how a brand new SUV is cheaper to insure than a 8 year old sedan. (Well, at the time I was shocked. I understand now that it's all the safety features and resale value that makes it so cheap to insure.)
It is good on gas mileage but there are other compact SUVs that have better MPG. I believe the new Ford Escape and the Mazda CX5 are comparable in size but have better MPGs. I do love Honda so I don't regret my choice.
I did look at the Ford Edge, the Nissan Murano, Mazda CX-9 or CX-7 and the Lexus suv but they were all 6 cylinders so gas mileage definitely took a hit and most of them require premium gas. I was not looking forward to the decrease in MPG and the extra cost of gas.
I was considering checking out the Rav-4, which is also comparable but like I said I was leaning really hard towards staying with Honda.

I have a 2006 trail blazer, I love the car itself in regards to size, features, etc but gas mileage SUCKS. It's close to paid off though so it's hard to justify buying another car and having a car payment just to have better gas mileage
