If you gained less than 35lbs during pregnancy...

I'm in the same boat as @hergreenapples. I'm pretty active with Crossfit (ok, except for the holiday break, lol) and I eat mostly healthy. Even in my first trimester, when I wasn't that sick, I was working out 4 days a week and still eating pretty darn good. And in the second tri, I had to eat higher calorie foods because I couldn't eat that much at once. I put on 10 in the first tri, 15 in the second, and my weight is still climbing, slow and steady. Some of it's probably because I'm very tall, but I figure if I'm active AND eat right, then there's not much i can do and it's just what your body is going to do, either way.

I think it's also important to acknowledge HOW you're putting on the weight. I'm not suddenly getting rolls of fat on the rest of my body and I'm still on the lean side. I'd be a LOT more upset about the weight gain if I felt like I was just putting on a lot of fat. But then all I would do is clean up my diet a little more and not cheat much at all. I know I'm retaining a fair amount of fluid and there's nothing I can do about that!

I don't follow a special diet, but I currently have a little cereal+milk+juice at 6am, then a greek yogurt+fruit+almond snack, lunch is a lean meat and some rice and maybe some veggies (today is fish), my afternoon snack is usually carrot sticks+hummus or yogurt, and dinner is a very small meal of learn meat+veggie+carb. If i eat too much, I get heartburn. I think i'll stay under 40, though.

I didn't do anything special. In fact, during my first and second tris I had to power pack my foods to try and gain weight. I walked for exercise... that's about it.

I gained around 22 lbs. I was very careful about what I ate and tried to eat the foods I craved in moderation. I didn't allow myself to eat gallons of ice-cream in one sitting, as much as I would have loved to! I also walked an hour every single day and took the stairs at work until about a week before delivery. I also think all that consistent movement helped me with my labor, because I had a relatively simple delivery.

I gained 36 lbs but I know I could have gained SO much less had I not been so sedentary and eaten so much.

Re: eating. They say only increase calories by 300 which is really only an extra cup of milk and maybe some nuts for protein. I did find that I was hungry a lot more - and you might too which is FINE just make healthy choices.

I wish I had worked out while pregnant too.

So while there are obviously things you can do, and it will help, just know that sometimes you do all you can and still gain weight and that's okay.

I gained 28-30 and that was a lot for my petite frame. But the only advice to give is to watch what you are eating and be active. My doctor said, women eat like they are eating for 2 but it's really like eating for 1 1/2. As for staying active, you don't have to go crazy, nice long walks or moderate paced workouts are fine. I had to be careful because if I worked out too hard I would bring on contractions. Most importantly, drink LOTS of water. That makes you fill fuller.

I am one of the few that didn't gain anything while pregnant. I lost about 30 pounds. I was overweight before the pregnancy though. I did manage it by eating extremely healthy. I cut out all carbs, and a lot of dairy. I ate a lot of fresh fruit and veggies. We also only ate extremely lean proteins (Chicken/Turkey). I also got out and walked our dog a couple times a day. I didn't want to get any larger then needed because I knew it would be too hard to get the weight get back off. My doctor and I closely monitored the baby's weight and growth. It all worked out well for me.

I gained about 28. I lost 10 in the first tri.
I didnt work out and ate what i wanted but maintained my vegetarian diet.

I also only ate carbs during the first tri. That was all I could keep down if I was lucky. The OB said carbs were better than nothing and i made up for it in 2nd tri.

I gained 23 lbs and delivered about 10 days early. I did Crossfit through about 13 weeks when I had bleeding and my OB told me to take a few weeks off, and I pretty much stopped working out.
I ate total crap during my pregnancy. I was nauseous throughout the whole thing, and basically would eat whatever seemed least likely to make me want to vomit which was basically really gross carbs. Like donuts and spaghetti-o's. Sometimes I think I made my husband want to throw up just watching me eat that crap.
I ate a ton second trimester when I felt less ill, but I think overall I wasn't eating that much because I felt so sick.

At 27 weeks with twins, I've gained 20 lbs. I hope to stay under 35-40 total in the 10 weeks or less that I have to go. I tend to gain weight very easily, so I'm shocked I've done so well so far. Honestly, I haven't felt like working out much at all. I count walking the dog as my exercise most days, though I try to swim occasionally. As for eating, I pretty much just didn't change the amount I are. Since the babies burn extra calories, I think my pre-pregnancy diet plus occasional treats has kept me from gaining excessively. That said, when I had severe morning sickness, I ate whatever I could keep down--bring on the white carbs! Like you, I really wanted to keep my weight gain to a reasonable amount, but I remind myself a lot that my body really knows best. I go through phases where I gain a lot for a couple weeks and then will have weeks where I don't gain much at all, even though I'm not doing anything differently.

I worked out thru 38.5 weeks and I gained 30 exactly...My body is dying to be fat- I have to really watch it and exercise when not pg, and I felt like once I got pregnant, my body was like "Hellz Yeah! Let's get obese!" So I really watched what I ate and worked out 3-4x a week ( 25-30 on elliptical, 30 on weights)... And I still gained 30!

@PrincessBaby: How heavy were the weights that you lifted? Pre-preg I lifted 10lb hand weights (so 20lbs total). I also have 5lb hand weights but they seem so light. I don't want to go too heavy, though.

@lawbee11: w/free weights (like bicep curls) I worked with 10 lbs on each side.. Squats (shoot me!) I did 15 lbs each hand... But I used a lot of machines while preg and so it was more on them, depending on the muscle...

I'm old too (32.5) so a young whippersnapper like you prob won't have to work so hard!

I gained 26lbs. I didn't do anything special other than drink a ton of water each day. I drank at least 100oz of water every day and I think it helped a lot. I would've gained less if I had been a little better with my eating habits.

@PrincessBaby: LOL! I mainly just want to do butt/thigh exercises with weights. I have some junk in the trunk already and I am worried that it's going to get scary towards the end!

@Sweet T: Awesome! I have made it a point to drink tons of water (it's pretty much all I drink other than milk and I am already really tired of it, but I know it's important).

I gained 27 lbs total (I think...I never really weighed myself). I worked out lots throughout my pregnancy and stayed really active. I drank lots of water but my eating habits were sub-par.

In regards to lifting weights, I lifted up to 95 lbs above my head or from the ground to my shoulders (and i was 107 pre-pg) so I don't think you're pushing it with 10-15 lbs. I think any exercise is fabulous throughout pregnancy as long as you were doing it pre-pg. your body will tell you what is too much!

I gained a total of about 5 pounds, but that's because I followed the diabetic diet and actually lost nearly 15 pounds during the first half of pregnancy and then slowly gained the rest.

I ate like crazy, exercised but not that much, and kept up my mediocre diet. I gained 14 pounds, all of it baby and swelling. I was down 5 pounds below PP weight by 2 weeks post partum.

Seriously, I did nothing. So much of it is just what your body wants. You only control a very small chunk of it. I'd really suggest doing your best, and letting that be enough. I've gained 10 pounds breastfeeding, and all I can conclude is that my body is just backwards. A lot of it is just out of our control.

@lawbee11: Agree with @Sammyfab... just this morning I did several sets lifting 45# above my head and frequently squat more than that (double). I think whatever you were doing before you got pregnant is safe now, just don't push too much beyond that. Your body will tell you when it's time to slow down.

Yep, i'm totally with @sammyfab on this one. I have frequently lifted weights in the 80+lb range. Your body will definitely let you know. I've had to drop to weights in the 50-60lb range now. I still want them to be challenging but not to the point that they strain the parts of my body they shouldn't. Stick with what you are comfortable with. Squatting is great for you!

    @SaraC:

"I'd really suggest doing your best, and letting that be enough."

    This. Exactly.

I was small pre-pg and gained more weight than I wanted (a lot of fluid weight, but weight nonetheless). Despite my best efforts, I gained weight every week. I ate healthy and exercised until I had pre-term labor at 22 weeks, but I still gained slowly and evenly throughout my entire pregnancy. I just had to relax and go with it. So do what you can, within reason, but in the end, you need to be at peace with your body and cut yourself at least a little slack.

I gained about 22lbs. 5'4" and 115 before pregnancy and I lost it all within the first 2 weeks PP. I worked out and ate similarly to pre pregnancy but added extra healthy snacks and toned down the intensity of my workouts. I continued to lift small weights (5-10lbs) and went to the gym 3-5x/week until the day before I had my son. I think not overeating and continuing to workout were the key to staying a healthy weight and losing it so fast. For reference, LO was 7lb 6oz and born at 40w1d.

This thread makes me a little jealous of all the people who can eat regular foods! I've been so sick for...6 weeks now? And I spent the first 4 1/2 weeks only able to eat crackers, some fruits (because I have GERD and can't have acidic foods), and plain toast with butter.

I cannot stomach even the *smell* of meat cooking. I spent Thanksgiving hiding in my in-laws room (furthest from the cooking) and hugging the toilet.

I think if you haven't had severe morning sickness, you have no idea how bad it can be. My MS has felt *exactly* like the stomach flu I had last summer, only 6 weeks long. I have spent many a nights, in a cold sweat, shivering over the toilet. Trying to eat a chicken salad or something would just not work at that point, any more than it would work if you gave your child a big, juicy steak when they are having the stomach flu.

And somehow, with all my non-eating, I still gained 6 lbs when I went to the doctor! When I asked her how that was even possible, considering I must have been eating 1/3 of what I ate before, she just said everyone is different. So Frustrating!! =) I'm not sure if it's a combination of all the foods being salty (crackers have a LOT of salt), or if it's because I get so dizzy and naseous when I walk, I've stopped doing anything. I basically just stopped walking, and spend my at-home time lying in bed, crying. haha. (joke- kind of--there's been some crying).

Luckily, I am 12 weeks today, so I am hoping, praying, and preparing to bribe the universe that this will all let up soon.

@SaraC: This. I wasn't going to respond because I didn't think I could put it in terms like this.

My weight during pregnancy was one of the last things I was concerned about. I already eat balanced and fairly healthy. Did I let myself indulge in pastries and junk food occasionally? Yes. Did I go crazy? No. (Now I can't anymore because I have GD, but you get the point).

Please don't go on a "pregnancy diet" or force yourself to work out to extremes so you can avoid going over a specific number. Eating a normal balanced diet -- and yes, that includes carbs -- and walking or doing exercise that is comfortable to you and doctor-approved is enough. Be kind to yourself. Stressing about what you're eating and gaining isn't healthy for the baby either!

@lawbee11: Thanks for starting this thread fellow Aug 2013 Mama! I am so hopeful I can keep it to 30lbs as well but since I am just 6.5 weeks and already up 3 I am feeling discouraged...like many other people I can only stomach carbs right now which is my biggest enemy!!!!

I think as with any other time in your life if you balance healthy eating with a little guilty pleasure you should be fine! I gained about 45lbs during pregnancy and you could never tell! No one would believe me but I did! My OB was not concerned about the numbers as long as I and baby were healthy.
