If you get a card or present in the mail, do you open it right away or do you save it for the birthday/holiday/special occasion? I always tear into it immediately, but my friend always waits and is shocked when I call to thank her upon receipt of the gift. I just got a card and opened it without thinking. Just curious... what do you do?

I open right away! And if I send a gift, I would want them to open it right away too and let me know that they have received it.

I open cards immediately, but gifts wait until the day of regardless of whether I received them in the mail or in person.
FYI - My friends and family think it's crazy.

@Kimberlybee: Yes, I agree. The worst is when you send someone something and they don't respond and you have to ask if they got it.

Cards I open right away, but the bday presents I got from ILs this year I saved til my actual bday .. I had to wait a few days & it was hard, but I wanted more presents to open on my bday! Lol

I voted open right away. Cards I ALWAYS open right away. Birthday gifts I almost always do. Christmas gifts are the only exception. When we don't see my MIL for christmas (which is usually) she ships our gifts to us and we put them under the tree to open when we do "our" christmas (which is before we start our holiday travels). My husband is like your friend though, he ALWAYS waits until his actual bday to open stuff
