@Freckles: oh honey! This is not boring. I kid you not when I tell you: I spend hours looking for window coverings every day.
I am in the market for white, plantation shutters. My husband doesn't love them, so something like white wooden blinds might do too---but I want something gorgeous. Needless to say, even with an extra $500, I am not 100% sure.
The top pic is the look I want and the 2nd pic is the look DH wants. The 2nd pic is more realistic of the shape of our windows in our kitchen.

@CupQuakeWalk: Is $500 even a lot for window coverings? Hahaha. The buyers requested that they get all of our window coverings. I resisted leaving our new custom drapes so our real estate agent is giving us money to cover it. Any sites you recommend? Seriously, never really gave much thought about it before.

@Freckles: honestly- I use JCPenney for all window coverings. They have a great custom department, where they measure or you do, and pretty much anything can be made. $500 isn't enough to do a whole house but it's a good chuck! Plantation shutters are obviously in a different ball game though. Enjoy the new place:)

@looch: living room (3) and 3 bedrooms
@CupQuakeWalk: I'm thinking of the very least getting blackout shades for the bedrooms. Too bad we don't have JC Penney up here in Canada! I know $500 isn't a lot but i'm hoping it'll cover the basics for now.

I feel like that's a lot of windows to address for $500...other than inexpensive mini blinds or roller shades, I don't know of a whole lot of options. Do you have Home Depot or Lowes? They usually have good off the rack solutions.

@Freckles: If you have a Menards or Home Depot, I believe they will cut any blinds to the size you need. My in laws were able to get "custom" shades and saved money but splitting them in half.

@CupQuakeWalk: drool! I loooooove plantation shutters!
When we first moved into our house we were in a rush (and tight budget) so we just grabbed enough of the white plastic blinds. We're slowly doing one room at a time into the white wooden blinds. We get them from Lowes, and they will actually cut them at the store for you so you don't have to mess with them. They're round $35/window for that brand-Levolor.
The reason we are doing it one room at a time, other than money, is because in rooms like our bedrooms we keep the curtains closed all the time. So those rooms still have plastic blinds with nice curtains. I get a lot of the curtains from Target because they are cute, decent quality and are local so I can see them in person!

@CupQuakeWalk: same! Plantation shutters! We have nasty mini blinds in our office and I would love to update them!

We have fake wooden blinds in our living room and i would love to update the rest of the house. They are like a cross between the two pictures @CupQuakeWalk shared....they could be a good compromise. I am pretty sure these are the ones we have. We got them at lowes. http://www.lowes.com/pd_142311-15766-EFWCDD3516406D_0__?productId=3365522
