For what period of time, if any, were you put on pelvic rest?
I'm having some doubts about my doc and I want to see how far outside the norm his recommendations are.

I had two incidences of first trimester bleeding with my second LO. The first time was early, maybe around 6 weeks. It happened on a weekend and I didn't even call because I knew there was nothing they could do if I was miscarrying. By the time Monday rolled around it was stopped and I had an appt. scheduled later in the week. the second time was probably around 12 weeks and was a larger gush of blood, again on a weekend. I called, but again, not really anything they could do at that point. I had an appt scheduled that week also, but she said she'd get me in sooner if I wanted. Both times I did a sort of self-imposed pelvic rest and tried to take it easy for a few days. But my Dr. never brought it up.

About 7 days after bleeding stopped. And by pelvic rest it was basically, no sex and no strenuous cardio (like running)

I can't remember exactly the amount of weeks but I bled at 5w and I know we were allowed to have sex sometime by the beginning of the second trimester. But I know we would have been allowed sooner, we just assumed the directions were "until further notice" and then when I brought it up my dr said it's fine and sort of implied I hadn't been on pelvic rest for awhile.. So I would say just a few weeks after the bleeding was the last my dr mentioned it, and we went a good extra month!!

I was put on pelvic rest for 2 weeks, until a f/u ultrasound. But at the follow up, they said I had placenta previa and pelvic rest was extended for another 3 weeks.
My bleeding was caused by an SCH, and happened at 10 weeks, don't know if that makes a difference.

None of your options really apply to me. With my daughter I had a fair amount of bleeding episodes and each time they would put me on pelvic rest for a week and then eventually they just put me on pelvic rest forever since my cervix was apparently a very sensitive Sally. Are you concerned that your doctor is being too cautious or not cautious enough? I don't think one can ever be too cautious when it comes to pregnancy, but if you don't think he's being cautious enough, then just only do what you're comfortable with.

I bled after sex once in the first trimester, just no sex/exercise for 2 weeks. Never got a reason for it, and never happened again.

@Truth Bombs: too cautious. I had a couple hours of bleeding at 10 weeks. I'm 15 weeks now with no more bleeding and he's basically said pelvic rest until I'm ready to have the baby.

@Mae: That seems a little crazy to me. I had bleeding several times in the first tri after sex and once or twice completely randomly. My dr. just said I had a sensitive cervix and not to worrying unless there was cramping or clots.

I had first tri bleeding and a good sized SCH and was put on pelvic rest (but not bed rest) for 6 weeks to start, then additional weeks after f/u ultrasounds showed the SCH had not resolved.

@Dahlia: right?! And there is no known cause for the bleeding. Everything else has been fine. No miscarriages. Normal/uncomplicated first pregnancy. I had an u/s the morning after the bleeding and it had totally stopped and they saw no reason for it, the u/s tech said probably a small blood pocket that had burst, no big deal. But my doctor says that ANY bleeding in the 1st trimester is associated with an increased risk of premature labor, even though that risk is still small, and therefore he recommends pelvic rest for the rest of pregnancy or at least until you reach viability at 24 weeks.
I think I'm going to get a consult with another OB and see about switching. this isn't the only issue that I've felt he's being really overly cautious on, and it actually makes me nervous that he isn't confident in making real medical DECISIONS rather than just always taking the most restrictive path possible.

I had bright red bleeding after sex, called the midwife and she calmed me down and said it was normal (I didn't know the amount I bled was normal) and it stopped over night. Then a week later I had even more bleeding, except it was dark blood and a generous amount. It happened at the gym immediately following an ab exercise. It was at that point I was told to hold off on having sex or strenuous exercise until my ultra sound and given the OK from the doc. I had a few more times of spotting leading up to the ultra sound but it all turned out ok. I was so scared! I think I was just sensitive in the first half of my pregnancy. I'm way better now.

@Mae: it seems strange that he's so cautious without any particular indication of risk. I will say that I had my daughter 4 weeks early, but I highly doubt that was connected to first trimester bleeding!

I was put on pelvic rest for the entire first trimester after I started periodically bleeding at 6 weeks going forward. My obgyn said something along the lines of "sex during the pregnancy is no good at any time". I thought that was a crazy thing to say. But each time I had sex, I would bleed. So we stopped and didn't have anymore until the night of my due date!

@agold: if I was bleeding regularly or especially after sex this would not seem crazy to me. But it was like 2 hrs of bleeding 5 weeks ago.

I had pretty heavy bleeding at 7 wks and had an US which showed SCH. My RE put me on like 2 days of bedrest and I think a week or 2 of pelvic rest. Although it was all kind of conditional on how I was doing, if the bleeding stopped or continued, etc.
For what it's worth, I did have preterm labor symptoms with cervix changes starting at 23 weeks although baby didn't come untol 39 weeks. Who knows if the two are related.
